I follow the light as well, and have never made it over 5K w/ synthetic.
I actually have dino in it now - we will see how long it lasts.
W/ Syn oil , I use between 1/2 & 3/4 qt every 3K.
The car has a 2800 stall - that may make a slight difference.

The oil light can't tell what oil is in the car. It uses a series of calculations that are based on temp, rpm, load, etc to judge the oils lifespan. It is a "dumb" system that can't actually measure the oil for wear. But if you are running synthetic (and it is set for regular oil) you should be quite safe to follow it. I ignore mine and change oil every 5K with Mobile 1.
I just changed mine today. I got just over 5 quarts out of it (of the 6 that I fill it with) at 4,500 miles. So, this time it only used 1 quart. At one point, I put in 6, found it a little low, added one, went autocrossing and got 4 out a little later when it was changed (total use 3 quarts). It seems to vary on my car.
