how much gear whine is normal?

The rear started whinning at only 100 miles and mostly noticable from 60-65. However it has got loud at 70 with 1600 miles now which it used to quiet down at that speed. I can hear it even with the radio on. I had the dealership drive the car about a month ago and they said it's fine and they signed it off as operating as designed. Could this cause my car to lose power? I will take the car back in only if it keeps getting worse and this time I would ask the service manager or one of the reps to go for a ride with me so I can get the can to make the noise. I have the worse luck with noisey rears, my stang's rear was done twice and still clunks and makes half a dozen other noises. Damm bastards. Some F-body owners say it's normal to have some gear whine and others say it shouldn't make any noise. I have the factory 3.42's.

When I first bought my car I had that as well, only not quite as bad as you have described. I took it to a GM shop and had it checked out. My differential fluid ended up being a bit low. They replaced the seal and refilled it. The whine has been gone ever since.

Did the GM Dealer at least offer you some cheese to go with your wine?? Sorry, could not help it. Their should be very, very little or no whine, except in reverse. None in all 3 camaros here. Later>>>>

I don't feel like taking it in right now unless it is causing a power loss. When I brought the car in before I don't know who the hell drove the car, but they must be deaf or had the sterio way up. If it gets worse then I will take it in. That would suck to have to have the geasr replaced if that's the problem because then I would have to drive real nice and easy for a few hundred miles to break them in.

Gear whine on a new behicle with the stock rear is not normal and is indicative of a problem. Try another dealer.
