How is LS1 Timed?

How is LS1 Timed?
Forgive my ignorance. But how is the LS1 timed? Where is the camshaft (or crankshaft) sensor? How does it work? Does it measure in 360* incriments? The LT1 uses the optispark (which is a distributor and camshaft sensor in one).
