How big of a cam can I go with stock heads?

I can only afford a short block... and since I have my choice of cam... I want one that's buildable on... I want the magic 500hp n/a... (and yes I am choosing to do this with a stock crank! ) Has anyone out there actually not had to tune their computer to even drive the car, after a cam change?? I want the biggest... but I will still have stock heads for a while, and I won't be able to just go somewhere and have the computer tuned... (unless someone out there knows of a place around Jackson Michigan.. ) I will have it tuned sometime after I get it in... just not right after... oh... it had 130,000 miles on it... and the oil pump decided that pumping oil wasn't what it was designed to do.... anything guys???

First off you will need LS1 Edit if you are going to put in a big cam. We put some basic tuning in my car just so we could get it to the dyno.500 hp at the motor is possible with heads. Dont skimp on tuning either.Get on a dyno and have someone who is familiar with LS1 Edit tune it.

Oh no... that's 500 flywheel hp... I'm thinkin 680 hp with a blower... I'm not crazy! Maybe someday... I just want a cam that with stock heads, will produce somwhere around 400 rwhp... that's a bit extreme, I know... but it's what I'm lookin for.. and when I get heads... I want that same cam to produce 500 hp at the flywheel... somehow... stock rods, stock crank, diamond pistons... and where in Michigan can I get it tuned???? Thanks!!

Rapid Motorsports did the same cam I have and make 400 to the wheels on a conservative dyno in an M6. It is a 230/230 .590/.590 on a 112 lsa. Click the link in my sig and talk to Mikey.Tell him Brett sent you.400 is obtainable with stock heads. It will require tuning though.

do you have a stall?

A G5-X2 has produced 425rwhp on stock heads (full exhaust), but tuning is a must. Keep in mind mail order is a possibility, but i reccommend investing in LS1 Edit.

IMO mail order tuning is out of the question with a cam of that size.Do a search on Ed Wright

Detroit Speedworks does dyno tunes. They're only 80 miles or so from you I think.

I was thinking trailor.?. I don't know if you have any friends with a towing package on an truck, but it can't be all that much to rent a trailor. I'll talk to Jason and see what he did when he tried to trailor his SS up to Stanton. I'm up for going though if I'm not in class!

It's sittin' on my uncles trailer right now... we haven't got it over to my cousin, Jasons, house yet... and he won't let me put it in his garage until the shortblock is sitting in the garage... so... I gotta get on that... I'm probably getting it from LS1speed.com... they seem pretty cool... thunderracing said 90 days!!! wow... man, this may lead me to just get an Advance Auto Parts special... they have a long block here locally, ready to go.. I'd just have to put my springs and cam in... oh well... I'll let ya know when I find something out...

Rapid sells ARE motors also. You can get a stock cid rebuild or while your at it you can tweak it a little. If I had to start over with a motor I would atleast put a set of good pistons in.Whatever you do,do not skimp on a motor you will regret it

What are you basing your claim that dyno was 'conservative' on? YOur talking about performance specialists in pottstown right? Bryan Herter also told me that he though that dyno read low. I'm just curious because i put down 351 STD hp on that dyno, 343 SAE

Nice times btw , do you have any weight reduction? other than your lighter al block

Yeah PS is the dyno I used for the numbers on the h/c setup. I dynoed about 10 rwhp/rwtq lower when I did my baseline before the h/c. On any other dyno I would do 340ish/355ish.
People will argue about it all day long with me but thats what my car did on their dyno.Dont get me wrong Ray is a great guy and they treated me well but something is up with the dyno. I have heard the dyno is more accurate if a bunch of people are dynoing the same day and in front of you though.
Rapid has had a few M6 cars do 400 with stock heads on that same dyno with nobody dynoing before them. With someone educated with LS1 edit the idle is streetable and wont shut off at lights.
BTW my numbers are SAE corrected.Hope that answered your questions

I guess that is confidence inspireing that multiple people have said it's low. I did pick up 6 hp while i was there, and thats what we were there for. Bryan said he thought it read about 10 hp low. i'd redyno at the location of my original baseline, it's just too expensive.

I got RAPED on the price there. THey charged me for a full hour when we were there prob 35 minutes which was ok, but they ALSO hit me with a setup fee.

you didn't say if you had wight reduction with that 11.9 run. I'll never pull a 1.7 60', but i'm still doing that stupid speculation before i go to the track the first time after the mods.
