Question Hose Change Procedure

I'm going to change the radiator hose and the water pump hose.

Is there a special procedure to do this because I tried to just take off the radiator hose during an oil change and coolant spilled out, is this normal or do I have to turn something to shut off the flow?

Thanks.

Yes,that's normal.Any coolant in the hose for the water pump will come out.If you're doing the radiator hoses though you will need to drain the radiator or you will lose all your coolant on the ground. If the coolant is more than 3 yrs old it would be a good time to change it
