Help!! Quickly Please!!

So i just drove my car over to the gym. not an hour later i go back out to it to drive home and it wont start. the keyless entry works and there is no lag in the horn. the lights turn out but when i turn my key over the radio will not turn on. the dash where the speedometer is will not turn on or show the mileage. i called my mechanic and he said it sounds like it isnt reading the key because the security light was still blinking. i tried putting the car in gear and starting it and still no luck. please give me some advice. already called off work sick last week and cant afford to miss anymore!!! thanks guys!!

Thats a common problem. You have a faulty Vats. Mine does this occasionally aswell but not very often. When this happens, you need to keep the key out of it for atleast 30 seconds or longer... then put the key back in and crank... The car isn't going to crank PERIOD if the security light is blinking... You should go back and try restarting it... Also... NEVER start a car in gear, I don't think it would let you anyway but you could SERIOUSLY mess up an A4 by doing that...

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Put the key in, turn, and nothing, and my alarm would go off every time. Took it to the dealer, and they charged me something like $400 to fix it. This was before I started working on cars.

Sounds like the mechanic is right, and the resistor in your key isn't working right anymore; could be an easy fix if you know which key you need and can easily get one from your local dealer

The dealer can test your key to see if it still works.

keep the key out of the ignition for 3 mins i think....the security light will go out...then make sure the key is in all the way (wiggle it around and press IN) and then try it.

happens from time to time

My problem was the wires broke in the key cylinder. Very common problem apparently in all chevs.

X2 what Oxygen454 says.
I had the same problem w/ 2000 SS. One thing I did different was that I went to a junkyard & for $5 cut the VATS underdash pigtail connector out of a wreck (any GM w/ pelet key will work). Soldered the proper resistors together. The next time the SS stranded me I just swaped the jumper in & left the wire running up the steering column unconnected. Have not had the problem since. I believe the problem is in the pick-ups to head the resistance in the ignition switch.
