Help with New z28

After talking to a few of my buds, they all call me retarded for this but I agree with them. I should have inspected the vehicle better or gotten someone else to before I made the purchase. But the guy I bought it from was a buddy of mine who I'd done a tour at Iraq with and trusted him. Anyhow, What are some of the things I need to get checked out right off the bat seeing how I am a total newby when it comes to vehicles. I want to know what sorts of parts I need to replace or upgrade etc, get checked out and what sort of stuff causes problems. I can't seem to find a site where all the part names are but this is all I know about it.

Custom pewter metallic paint 1998 z28
slp loudmouth 1 catback exhaust - whatever that means, all i know the cat's gutted..
Black berger panel
Projectors with angel eye headlights with matching black corners/turnsignal lights
Eibach lowering kit 1.5 - 2 IN (the kit is just springs)
SS Spoiler & SS Hood
18 IN chrome (superbadass) rims, no idea what kind. And newish tires.
..Help?

Miles, auto, manual? Keep an eye on oil usage. Mine uses very little, others suck it up. Check the brakes, my Z had stuck caliper slide bolts that caused excessive wear of the front discs. Watch out for rear pinion seal leak, if diff runs dry, you will be replacing a lot of parts. Replace all fluids, fuel filter, spark plugs if it still has the factory junk plugs in there, or if mileage on plugs is unknown.

Read up on how to do maintenance, on the net, and buy a manual. Here is a good site to get you started: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm

If you're still active (what branch?), your base should have a hobby shop where you can work.

well an update from last post guys, this weekend my buddy took me down like a couple hours away, and they did a re-inspection for me and just passed it in the system and gave me a sticker. the light is still on though. Also, is there somewhere that i can get a list of parts that come on the z28 stock? I can't seem to anywhere. Also, if I don't need new cats then, what should I look at for upgrading first for performance?

anything I need to change in unison with the headers? i.e. if i replace them, will another part suffer if it isn't changed as well? I was looking at different types and hookers and SLPs or anything else?

Yes if you change factory manifolds for headers then you'll need a y-pipe too and front O2 sensor extensions.
And then the factory cat back will be the restriction so you'll want to get a new free flowing cat back.

Hooker is good for long tubes/y-pipe. And there aerochamber cat back is nice too.
SLP is bad for long tubes due to lack of ground clearance.
There are probably 20 other brands of headers out there, do some reasearch.

al

he has the LM1 on there.

other than that your info is good.

to the OP

you may think about swapping the LM resonator for a good straight thru muffler like the borla XR1 or magnaflow 4x9, or even the Summit 24" bullet muffler.

with out cats that exhaust will be loud and raspy. the race mufflers tone it down a bit.

well after some more research about my car, I guess the cat's aren't gutted. they were just f***ing with me. anyhow, a little updated information on the exhaust system. they are 3 inch pipe SLP Loudmouth exhaust system. And the exhaust manifolds are stock. Does this change anything?

doesn't change much

the loudmouth is a loudmouth...for the most part.

and i stand by my notion that if you ever do get rid of the cats...it will be too raspy.

Absolutely, longtubes without cats + Loudmouth = way too noisy/raspy.
