Question help with new Z transmission problems

Just got a 2002 Z28 and I have a few concerns and I need to know anybody else has them.

First, the tranny (standard 6 speed) is very clunky. At high RPMs (near redline) it's almost impossible to make a quick shift. At lower RPMS, it's better, but still not great. Dealer said at first it would smooth out, but I have 1,200 miles now and it's not better. Now dealer says this is normal for this tranny, I hope not.

Also, first thing every morning, when I make my first shift from first to second, a bad clanking noise happens. Seems to come from the back. Never happens again once car is warmed up. Dealer says this is because of new type of tranny fluid. Again, I don't think so.

Does anyone else have these problems? Anybody know what causes them, what can be done to fix them?

Thanks

I have the same problem with my 99 Z (A4), with the clanking noise in the transmission when starting out. I am going by the dealership tomorrow to find out an answer. I bought it 2 months ago with that noise and haven't had time to get back to the dealer. I also have been told that my car has a shift kit in it so we will see.

No, that does not in any way sound normal, at least not in my experience. I've driven several off-the-lot f-body cars and none did what you described. If you think something is broken, MAKE the dealership take care of it, or make them show you another car and prove that this condition is "normal". If you stir things up enough, they will fix your car. I just got 2 free rotors on mine cause they were warped all to hell. It took 3 weeks and several trips and phone calls, but they gave them to me. And I have 15000 miles.

Thumbs up

My tranny was doing the same thing. i have 18,000 on it. took it to my dealer and was pretty pissed that it was messed up (sycro's), talked to the GM server rep, and got a new tranny.

I am going to pick it up in an hour or so, i'm so pumped

My car is a new 6sp.. its great!

It doesnt exhibit any of the symptoms you describe. It shifts smoothly in every gear.

The only normal issue I have seen with the 6sp trannies is if you are in neutral and go to put it into 1st and find that it doesnt want to enter, the manual states to press and release the clutch then try again. It has worked for me and I would consider that acceptible since its in the manual.
(yup, some people read those!)

I suggest you start to raise a stink or nocholantly go and test drive another new one and when you come back say, hey! you know what? MINE DOEST DO THAT!
hehe
good luck!
