Help me decide on exhaust...

Alright, I'm getting tired of my friend's Taurus SHO sounding more Muscle than my engine that is almost 2x his size.

I need opinions on the following.

1) Having my local Big Al's Mufflers straight pipe my car, just remove the muffler, and split it to two outlets, either keeping the stock tips or using the bigger, chrome, muscle tips.

2) Buying the Loud Mouth. stealthperf.com has it for $334.95 shipped.

Any ideas/Anyone know if these will pass inspection here in Virginia? If it's straight piped, will it roar, or rasp?

Also, the same muffler shop has a Christmas special for $199 you get one glasspack, then y-piped to two outlets, with chrome tips. Would this be insanely loud?

I want to gain a bit of performance, and make my car sound muscle, while looking hot as hell. Lets hear the opinions guys...

Thumbs up

Do the Dynomouth mod...
Al's muffler shop can do it. Mine was $140 INSTALLED.
You'll love the sound and it flows as well as cat-backs costing much more.
Go to page 2 of my website for sound clips, info, and install pics.
Good luck
Dave

Edit: DON'T use the glasspack offered by the muffler shop! Use a DynoMax bullet as per instructions. The generic glasspacks I have seen at muffler shops couldn't flow as well with all the louvers poking into the exhaust stream. Also, the straight pipe idea would rasp, it needs a bullet in there to refine the tone a little.

I just installed the Magnaflow cat back on my 99SS and it's a great looking system with the 3 1/2 inch polished stainless pipes, the sound is pretty mellow but very muscular at WOT. It cost $390 for the system. I have a Borla installed on my 98Z28 and I'm running the 25% opening plate (smallest) right now. I paid $600 for that system, I think they're alot more now. It's alot louder than the Magnaflow. I think straight pipes IMHO would be way to loud, but that's me. I met a guy who had a 99 Z28 and he cut the exhaust pipe off just past the cat, IMO it sounded like ****, way to loud.

Yes, straight pipes would be good if it was true dual, but he's just talkin about removin the muffler and straight pipin it from there, so it wouldn't sound as good, be very raspy!

As for what to do, you have an SS, so you already have a 3-in cat-back, so I would do the dynomouth, best sound and power for the cheapest. There are also many different Bullit mufflers you could put in there. Personally I'll tell you one thing, don't get the magnaflow, I don't particularly like the sound of it, it's got a weird note to it. Never heard the dynomax in person, but a lot of people seem to like it, and it's a lot cheaper, but i've heard alot of good things about the Borla XR-1 Race Bullit (had a friend with LT's, O/R Y, loudmouth with XR-1 in place of resonator, everyone I know said it was one of the best sounding setups they've heard), kind of pricey though. So it's all up to you.

It's a great system. Not too loud, not too quiet. The polished tips and muffler look great as well. As far as a cat-back is concerned, it's all up to what you want... sound, material, visual appeal, cost etc. I wanted something that was deep, but not overly aggressive. The Magnaflow provides the perfect tone with headers imo. Good luck

If you have the money I would go with GMMG. Thats what I have on my car now. It sounds awesome with no drone or rasp. It really depends on what you're looking for though. Mines a daily driver so I didn't want something that would give me a headache after awhile. When I get a beater car, I will definetly a good dual exhaust set-up.
