HElP!!! Car stuck in 4th gear......

My 99Z is stuck in 4 gear. What is the problem??? Is this the end of my T56?? or can this just be a linkage problem?? Maybe a rebuild would be a good idea?

Well what I would do is diagnose the problem first by putting the car on Jack Stands and climb under and see if the Linkage is the problem.. From what I have heard about the T56 Trannys is the fact that they use Plastic Syncros and Gears (don't know personally if the Plastic gears are true) then you might have to rebuild the tranny or if you have an extended warranty on your car, take it to a Chevy dealer and have them fix it..

This same problem just happend top me last week.I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think you'll need a rebuild. My friend who is an excellent tranny rebuiler did the rebuid for me. What ends up happening is that the syncros wear out and the syncro slides to far and these little pieces of metal pins fall out and break. He also told me that it also happens after constant hard shifting with a stock shifter. The problem is that the stock shifter doesn't have stops and puts to much strain on the tranny when shifted hard and fast. Well I can tell you how I got mine out of gear.Step on the gas as your excellorating and rev it up to about 4000. Then just take your foot off the pedal fast.As your taking your foot off the pedal and the engine is not under load move the shifer out of gear. Good luck

UPDATE

I took the car to Ammco, and they said they can't fix/rebuild it, but they can do a swap out. I left it there overnight because I couldn't pick it up. Then they call me this morning and said that when you started it to move it out of the garage it came out of gear. WTF????

I wouldn't be surprised if the little pieces I spoke about between the syncros broke.I can not see your tranny working properly from now on after this problem. But GOOD LUCK.

Has it been popping out of 3rd before this? If so, it's a shift fork.

If the T56 tranny starts popping out of 3rd (heard of this happening a lot), eventually it will get stuck in 4th. At that point, most folks usually go ahead with a full rebuild.

When and if it happens to my car, I'll do the rebuild with the internals from a Viper T56 tranny. Much better stuff in there.
