Help - buying an 98 SS

Hello - Love the Board. I have a chance to buy a Black 1998 Camaro SS. it has 30,000 orig miles on it. They guy that owns it is a friend of my parents and has a bunch of cars. He bought it 2 or 3 years ago, it had been in an accident where the hood and front plastic had to be replaced. He has pictures of the damage and all of the work was done by the local dealer.

He is asking around 10,000. maybe can get it for 9,500

What do you think ?? I’ve always loved camaros and want to build a street machine.. how much do you think it would cost to get it above 400 HP.. another 4 K ?

Thanks for you response

30k in miles

I'd get it in a heart beat for 10k.

I would go for it, thats a great price. And for 4K in performance mods, you would definatly have a street machine.

Re: Help - buying an 98 SS

ditto - however, 30k miles sounds almost too good to be true, are you sure?
I have a 98 z28 with 58,350 and thought I kept in the garage too much!

not to be all doom and gloom as the SS sounds like a good deal especially if the 30,000 is legite but make sure there is no OTHER damage from that accident, i.e., front suspension....

Wowzer, 10k.

There is a guy on LS1.com offering free vin lookups, hit him up. He did mine and I found out some interesting things, all good news. Problem areas common on these cars already taken care of under warranty/recalls, so I'm hoping it's good to go.

Have him check out your prospective buy, thread is a sticky in AAG.

Wow! 30K for 10,000? I thought I found a good deal, 92,000 for 10,000. I would definately jump on that offer.

Re: Help - buying an 98 SS

keep in mind though that if it was a harder front end collision, the car will never drive the same again no matter how good the shop was that fixed it. When the frame gets bent, that's about it for the car. Make sure you take it on plenty of test drives to check alignment, wobbling, stability, etc.

If it was a light collision, like a fender bender, i'd say go with it. Sounds like a good deal.

That price is awesome. That car at any dealership by me is 15K easy. As long as the frame didn't sustain too much damage in that accident I would think you'd be crazy not to jump all over that deal.

Re: Help - buying an 98 SS

As long as the car drives straight, I wouldn't worry too much about the wreck. Just look the front over real well. My '97 was hit while parked and the frame was bent pretty bad. When I got it back from the shop, the car actually drove straighter than it did before the wreck.

Just use common sense and you'll be fine.

Re: Help - buying an 98 SS

bought my '98 for $10,000 and it has 80K on it, but that was with a 3 year 36k warranty which covers pretty much everything from alternator to the 10bolt.
