heads @ cam

ladies and gentlemen,
What would you recommend for a STREETABLE head and cam package at around 400 Hp? What about the lower end with 97k on it?

I like the patriot 226/226-585/585 cam along with their ls6 heads. The cam is very street friendly and it sounds way bigger than it is, and you can't beat their prices anywhere. You will still need a tune to get optimum performance.

^ I'd go w/ that one too... Around 228/228 .581 .581 113 or 114 LSA would be great. Wider power band over the 112 LSA.. Not by much, tho.. Do you want a choppy idle? NO? = 113, 114 LSA... or even 115 LSA.. Check Thunder Racing's cam selection..

Keep in mind, too may people are over-camming these cars today.. .So try to steer away from any radical cams, based on what you stated.

"Streetable" it like saying "comfortable." It is a matter of opinion. I know guys running TRex and Magicstick grinds on the street, but I wouldn't care to.

I have a 226 grind speced by GTP and not Patriot. It has more lift than the patriot grind. I like it, but have been thinking about going larger (F13ish). Then again, I'd also like to keep it and put some ported heads on the car. Patriot has a new grind now too. 225/229 .580"/.590" 114. IMO it would be better with a 112 or tighter LSA though. They are having a Christmas head/cam special. Look under the Sponsor sales section on LS1tech for the thread.

I've seen some impressive ET's come from a couple cars running the MTI G1 cam and their stage 2R heads. Thats if you consider 10's as impressive. Its a 228/232 588/575 113. I know its the entire combo including suspension that allows them to do this, but they do have to have the power to put down. MTI has a Christmas special going on now too. $1400 for hand ported heads is hard to beat. See thread in the same place as above.

Thanks for your response(s)

My concern for installing the head/cam packege is that I don't wind up with a pile of lower end parts on the first oil change. There is 97K on the motor .
Should I just plan on going through it? I have about $5K for a budget.

With 5k to play with I'd get a 6.0 and go from there, but I already have supporting mods.

Again, what do you consider "streetable?" Do you have a way around the environazis in your state? If not, stick with something like the CheaTR or MTI Stealth grinds. I didn't notice your state before, but even the 226 won't pass emissions.

As long as you have good oil pressure and your engine is not making any knocking sounds I say go for it. Alot of guys are modding their engines with alot more miles on the clock than yours including using nitrous as well. These engines seem to hold up very well if they are half way taken care of .

Well I got a medium sized cam from Bret Bauer and make the numbers in my sig through a 9" rear with stock heads. I cannot give you specs, but I'm sure he would have something for you as well. With some ported LS6 heads and medium size cam you could easily surpass your goals. My LS1 bottom end has 113k miles on it. My cam is 230* on the intake and peaks at 6400.

If 400RWHP is your goal then a Stealth II with ported heads and LT headers will put you a few ponies above that and you won't even notice the cam is there as it idles like stock due to a 116 LSA.

A 230 grind won't be legal in Cali.

Re'
He can't legally run LT's in Cali either. With having to run stock manifolds or shorties the CheaTR may be his best bet.

You may be right, but I am just giving examples here. My cam is far from large, especially by todays standards...just showing that a well thoughtout setup can outperform alot. With a ported Fast 90/90 and a stock rear I would be at 440rwhp or thereabouts. He did not specify what he would or would not do, so whether its legal or not is kinda off topic. I would rather get a custom emissions cam then an off the shelf one, I fail to see how that wouldn't be better.

Also with some GOOD ported LS6 heads, and emissions cam and full bolt ons and a $5k budget is still easy to surpass 400rwhp.

224 from TR....and either the stage 2.5 5.3L heads or maybe look into the TEA 1.5s

should easily make 400rwhp....and pass emissions

Being legal is very on topic seeing how he is in CA and he did specify STREETABLE in caps and all.

What you consider custom?
The CheaTR is a custom grind that TR sells. It was designed to optimize factory manifolds and I think Patrick G spec'd it. It isn't something that Comp Cams came up with and every shop sells like the 224 grind. Now the 224 I would consider "off the shelf".

I imagine even your cam is a grind that Bauer came up with and has used on more than one application.
