Headers: SLP vs. Hooker

???
How come most people advise against the SLP Long Tubed Headers when compared to the others on the market like Hooker Long Tubes or others? They are patented, so they must have the best design? SLP also claims the greatest HP gains and have the reputation to back them up. SLP could not sell crap. So whats the real deal?

Lots of people have serious clearence issues with the SLP ones from what I understand. They are also outrageously priced. They are still the Long Tubes i would put on my car though. I love SLP's products.

you = suckered in by SLP marketing.

ALL long tube headers will dyno within a +/- 5-8rwhp. what your paying for is fit, coating, and quality. if your going to spend 700+ on headers you might as well get some kooks or qtps which have the reputation of being top of the line and you dont have to worry about clearance issues like you do with the SLP's.

SLP claims up to 41hp and 50+ tq with there headers but those numbers were derived from there 382 stroker package. on the stock cubed ls1 it falls in line with all the rest.

FWIW i love my jet hots which are the same design as the hookers but improved upon.

My understanding of the issue:

Hooker Advantages:
1) Good fitting and good flowing headers and hang tight up to the floor board. Have heard that some people have had to grind a notch in the K-member to keep from rubbing and other say they have had no problems. I talked to Bob at EPP in Ft. Wayne and they only deal in the Hookers. He says that he has installed numerous sets and never had any fitment issues.

2) Hookers Headers cost less than SLP Headers.

Hooker Disadvantages:
1) Do not make Y-pipe with Catalytic Converters so they won't pass emissions testing.

2) Also they Y-pipe with the hookers supposedly does not flow as well as some of the other brands.

3) The Hookers use 18 gauge material tubing that is thinner than most brands so for long term durability the need to be Jet Hot Coated.

SLP Advantages:
1) Come with good flowing Catalytic Converters and don't seem to have any fitment issues such as banging or rubbing.

2) Are constructed of 16 gauge material and are ceramic coated for long term durability.

SLP Disadvantages:
1) They are suppose to be harder to install. I've seen some shops post install prices for as much as $200 more than other brands because of this issue.

2) Also the hang low to the ground so they tend to hit on speed bumps or bad road when hitting a pot hole.

Summary:
Both performance and fitment wise both headers are a good choice.

Good Luck,

Al

I know that SLP LT Headers will not produce 41 hp unless you have done head mods. Will Hooker Headers produce the HP gains when head mods are done also. Obviously yes, but how much? Hooker header are looking better and better thanks to price and clearance issues.

How much can I get them for (coated)?
What Y-pipe is best to fit them?
Are they going to be crazy loud?
How much HP gains can be expected if head mods are done? (41rwhp)?
Can they be done at home or on a buddys lift?

SLP have clearance problems especially with lowered cars, go with the hookers.

Does Random technologies Y-pipe and high flow cats hook to the Hookers LT headers?

I know that QTP sells a Y-pipe with Magnaflow Cat for around $500 and Jethot sells one with cats for around $400. They both work with Hooker Headers. I'm not sure if they have any banging issues.

Hooker's

Hooker Info:

I have a 2001 that I put the Hooker LT's on as well as the Hooker Y-Pipe. They install very easy. Jack up the car on 3 ton stands and take off the oil diverter,Wires, plugs, air tubes, and you have to dent in the firewall alittle on the driverside. The passanger side goes right in. I started at 6am and finished at 5pm. The Y-pipe was a little pain in the *** to get on but that was due to the Loudmouth already being on and I couldn't get it loose to install the Y-pipe. I did get it on and it wasn't too bad of an install in my book. I would get new GM gaskets for everthing. The ones they give you are crap. Also use the stock bolts. On Hookers Y-Pipe I had to dent in the crossmember a little more to prevent ratteling. It is LOUD as hell without cats and such. Thats the way I like it though. As far as clearence mine scrap on some speed bumps (barely) but I am lowered. If you arn't there should be no problems.

Get Lots of Band-aids.

As far as Slp. I have heard of people taking a couple days to a week getting them on.

Good luck on which ever you choose. You will love it.

I have the SLP longtubes on my 2K SS. The only complaint is clearance as they do hang pretty low. You have to be careful going over speed bumps and steep angle driveways. But once you learn how to drive it it really isn't a problem. The price might deter ya but the performance is rock solid. If you're car is lowered don't even consider it.

Thanks all, I want to get the $700.00 suspension kit f/ SLP that lowers the car about an inch or so...so it looks like the SLP LT headers are out of the question.

Hooker LT headers are the same price as SLP's if you get them in stainless steel so the price will be the same.

I was thinking about QTP's LT's and getting the electric cutouts put on with my SLP +10 HP exhaust that was ordered on my car. That should be quiet when they are closed and loud and freeflowing when open...right?
