Head Questions...

Yo

When I get my LS1, I want the meanest sound **** I can get... But I want it as a daily driver.

So far i've decided, well almost... what I want my exhaust setup to be like.

Pacesetters, ORY (Or flexible pipe from Pepboys), and a Loudmouth/Magnaflow Catback... Man that sounds nice.

I was told that Heads are a major factor in exhaust sound. And I love the deep power roar. Is this true? If I changed my heads after my full exhaust, with the right set of course... will it deepen my sound or at least altar my sound?

Also, if I wanted to do a head install, would it be stupid to not do a cam install? I want to keep it a daily driver because I don't have any other cars. So if I did a head install and not a cam... worth it? Or should I put in something like a small hotcam or whatever.

I also don't want to munch on my mpg, so I need to factor that in as well. But I love a sick sounding car... so many decisions!!

Thanks in advance fellas...

call one of the many tuners on these boards and find a good matched heads and cam setup... tell them what you want, and they will set you up with the right combo, be it streetable with minimal lope, or downright sick. The stock cam stalls out pretty early, so if you are spending the money on heads... do it right and get a decent cam

Your heads have very little to do with the way a car sounds. The exhaust gases are only in the exhaust port for about three inches. That is hardly enough time to have much effect on the sound. The main engine factors that affect your exhaust sound will be displacement, compression ratio, cam, timing, headers, catalytic convertors, tubing diameter, tubing wall thickness, mufflers used, length of the tubing, and the design of the system. Being practical, about all we can control is the cam, headers, convertors, and mufflers. Since you are going to headers I assume you are going to delete the cats. Check your states yearly emission requirements before you do so you don't get caught at inspection time if you do. If you do delete the cats then true duals dumped in front of the rear axle are the meanest sounding exhaust you can put on our cars. You can hear some sound clips of true duals at http://www.laneswheels.com/ If you want to stay with a conventional type exhaust, stay away from flexible tubing and get a y-pipe designed for whatever brand headers you go with. Then just pick a catback system and hope for the best.

Don't forget firing order and what the motor is constructed of...

Also, we can easily change compression ration, exhaust design, length of piping, and displacement...

Custom exausts aren't that expensive, and if you want to spend money, things like new heads pistons etc can change your compression ratio and displacement... just about the only two things out of our control are firing order and material the engine is made of... which is why the lt1 sounds so much better than the ls1 lol..

milled heads or a boost in compression will give you alot more sound. after awhile your car will be to loud and it just gets annoying for you, the cops, and all around you

I was speaking in gereral terms but you are correct. However for what he is asking I hope my reponse will help him understand exausts a little better and not go spending over a thousand bucks for heads just to try and make his car sound better.

Yo

Its weird you said Heads make no exhaust change, because my friend is a mechanic and he says that Heads make the world of a difference. I used the Lincoln and Mustang as an example.

same engine, but different exhaust sounds... They use different heads. He was saying stuff about the combustion chamber and all this crap... I don't know what he was saying, but it was making sense. L0L

I think the LS1 sounds better then the LT1's... just me though.

When he's talking about the combustion chamber, changing the combustion chamber's size will adjust the compression ratio... also, the mustang has a different exhaust design...
