Thumbs up Head Cam Package finalized.

With my research now finished, I have finalized my parts choices.

Dart ported and polished heads - 315 CFM flow.
Precision Motorsports custom cam - 222/224 LSA 114
Kooks headers
Comp Cams roller lifters and push rods
Double Roller Timing Chain
Ported LS6 oil pump

I will be ready in about 30 days to start this build up. Wish me luck.

315 flow for heads seems kinda big... Any reasoning behind the roller lifters?...I might have missed a previous post/thread on this... Not trying to be a jerk, just wondering... I'll be doin a H/c in the spring.

Re: Head Cam Package finalized.

those heads are moving some air! is the 315 @ .600 or .650? also, what's the intake runner size?

did you go with the 850-16 lifters or the Comp R's? if you didn't buy them yet, I'd recommend the OEM style

LS1's are hydraulic roller motors

EDIT: I just realized that may not have been why you asked that question. It's a good idea to replace the lifters when the heads are off because the lifters on an LS1 sit below the heads and the only way to replace them is with the heads off. I would rather have peace of mind with new lifters than run with the stockers in there, especially if they have decent mileage on them.

^... Ok... But, yeah. It would be a good idea...It's not just a cam install, too. You're in there. What I meant by "Isn't 315 kinda big"... I mixed up the flow w/ the runner volume CC #'s.... Oops.... Was gonna say, I didn't know they made 315 cc intakes runners!..

I'm curious of your thoughts on this. Per your research that led you to this package, what are your ET/power goals for the car?

Re: Head Cam Package finalized.

I'm concerned with your head choice. Can you elaborate? What cc runner are you talking about? The 225s will do 300 out of the box. The 205s will do 280 CFM, but would probably work better in your application.

How much do you plan to mill them?

Re: Head Cam Package finalized.

I've heard alot about comp lifters failing and stock replacements to be the best. Am I wrong about this or is there something else I should know? I want to be informed because I am also about to start my head/cam build in a few weeks.

If I'm not mistaken the Comp-Rs are heavier than stock and could lead to some valve-float issues. IF I replace mine, I'll go back with some stock replacements. Does Comp manufacture an OEM equivalent GM roller lifter?

I haven't noticed any I went with Comp "r" s because they are more precise and won't pump up at high revs. They are very fussy to set right because they use almost no preload so you really need adjustable rockers. If you use too much preload they fail. But if done right they work great.

Re: Head Cam Package finalized.

still waiting to see what heads he's going with.

the dart 225s flow nearly 315cfm @ .600" but i think with that small of a cam the larger runner would kill low end power. he'd be better off going with the 205s. not sure what they flow at .600" but they are something like 296cfm @ .550", which is more than sufficient depending on how high the lift is on the cam.

other than that...the list looks good

teke184, fwiw my Darts flowed 279 CFM on a SuperFlow 600 flow bench. Compare this and it's not that much better than a stock LS6 head, but they've shown a 30 RWHP gain over 243 castings.

Flow numbers are one of the most important parameters for a good street engine and one of the least important parameters for a good street driven engine.
