Having a bitch of a time removing the oil pan...

...I smacked my oil pan a couple of days ago and I started to remove the oil pan to be replaced...the tranny is dropped, flywheel is off and I still can't get any clearence to drop the pan...it looks like I'll have to lift the motor or drop the k-member...which I don't wanna do right now. The problem is the oil pump pickup is still deep in the pan, if I remove the oil pump, would the pick up thing come out as well? What do you think?

I've never heard of anyone trying to get the oil pan out without either dropping the k-member or pulling the whole engine. Im pretty sure that the oil pickup tube and windage tray would get in the way if you just tried to slide it backwards.

If you do figure out a way to do it, please let us know.

Got it...you need to un-bolt the pick up tube...there is one bolt near the edge connected to the crank flange and one more bolt at the oil pump...near the front...very easy...you can drop the pick up tube with the pan...easy

You still have to drop the tranny to slide it back....that's the one thing I hate about the LS1 4L60E...no inspection cover

How do you get the oil pickup tube off without taking the timing chain cover off? Or did you take that off already?

If so, then you need to remove the front end of the engine, then the transmission, and it comes out? Hmm, still sounds like a ton of work!

it still is a ton of work but I didn't remove any of the front..when you do a an oil pump swap you have to drop the pan to get to that front pick up bolt..you only needs an inch or two to get to those bolts...other easy but a pain..
