1998 SS, wanting to get a lil more out of the gear box, what is a good reccomonded gear to stepup too, not looking to take the street drivibality out of her, but want a lil more go....someone reccomonded 3.83, feedback plz...Thank you

Going from 3.42's to 3.73's in an M6 isn't even worth your time or money for that matter. I am going to 4.10's later this month, because after extensive checking around I found out that with 4.10's at 75 mph is only about 1850 rpm or so. This is not that much of an increase versus the stock at somewhere between 1400-1600 at 75. For what you get going through the gears, I would go with 4.10's!!!

 

How do you know? Have you tried it? Don't knock it 'till you try it.

It is a noticeable difference.

But 4.10s are good gears, too. Say goodbye to traction on the street in 1st and 2nd gears.

 

Agreed, with the stock cam I loved the 3.73's in my M6.

I had 4.11's for a while and 4.30's now. the 4.30's I think would be a bit much for a stock motored car, the 4.11's would be lots of fun, and not too much for the motor, but you need sticky tires to really get the most out of them.

Keep in mind also the deeper the gears (higher numericaly) the higher the chance you will break something in the rear end. (this is the reason I originaly went with 3.73's instead of 4.10's)

GM gears are good. Richmonds are pretty strong but they whine A LOT!!!

This is true. I do not have them and probably will never have 3.73's. But I see where you all are coming from. I was just giving a ration of mph to rpm's that's all. I mean to have the pull down low and still manage highway speeds in 6th is a great combination. But I understand your thoery too.

 

are u a 6spd or 323 car....either way id keep the stock gearin and put my money elsewhere...nothing wrong w/ those gears plus u keep your decent gas mileage

 

I have driven M-6's with 3.73's though they are better than stock they are not worth the cost and expense of a gear swap, the best way I can explain it is if you had an auto with 2.73's would you put in 3.08's NO !! Unless you have power adders and will have to shift into fifth at the track. IMHO most go with 3.73's on the belief they are stronger than 4.10/4.11's. Flame away

 

no need to flame that statement, that is the exact reason I went with 3.73's when I changed gears originaly, though its not belief, its a simple fact, that deeper gears subject almost everything in the rear end to more stress, resulting in a higher possibility for breakage.

As for 3.73's not being worth the money/effort, that is a valid opinion, but not everyone will agree with it.
