Gear Questions?

I am debating putting either 3.73's or 4.10's in my SS... What all will I need other then the gears? Will I have to worry about busting axles or driveshafts or anything?? Please give me some feedback.

410'2 are way to much gear for your car , I dont care what anyone says . Not only will you have traction problems but youll have a change in gas milage " drastic " and no traction . And your car will not be as fun on the highway . I would go with 3:73's , thats what im putting in my TA .

Since you're considering 4.10's, I'm going to assume that you have a 6-speed. Otherwise, if you've got an A4, you're wanting too much gear. Having said that ....

I've got 4.11 gears in my WS6 and I love them. At the track I pulled a 1.9 60' time on Kumho 712's street tires. So, traction really isn't as bad as people say. I still use 1st gear all the time. Oh, and this is my daily driver ... about 35 miles round trip to work each day.

In the city, I get about 17 MPG, and I get on it a lot. On the highway over the holidays I got 22 MPG with the cruise set at 80 MPH. Driving at 80 MPH turns 2100 RPM in 6th.

I'm very pleased with my 4.11 set.

With the 6-speed, I think a lot of guys go with 4.10's. I think that 3.73's are almost not worth the effort over the factory 3.42's, so if you're going to change the gears, 4.10's make more sense.

With an automatic, 3.42's are a nice step-up, although 3.73's are fairly common as well. I've actually just bought a 4.10 rear end for my car (yes, with the A4) but I intend for that to be a track only gear, unless I decide I really like it on the street!

Considering you have the M6 with a .50:1 overdrive, 2000 rpm @ 80 mph is not much different than my A4 turns @ 80 mph with 2.73's . IMO, 4.10's are probably the perfect gears for an M6.

other than the stuff for the gear install you will need a Speedo processor unless you have one of the programmers ie edit HPP3 etc.I just yanked mine out after my dyno tune If you want it make me an offer.

Having driven both 3.72 and 4.11 rear M6 F-Bods ... the 4.10 (4.11 depending on your gear brand) will be your best choice.

If you come to Memphis, I'll let you drive mine.
