gear question...
I recently picked up a new Z and love it. I know that it does not have the performance gear option though, thus I have the 2.73s. I was just curious to know how much of a difference they are from the performance option 3.23s....do they really dog the car down off the line. I don't know too much about it, and I think my car is not too shabby.
So, how different are they? I have heard that it wouldn't even be worth doing an aftermarket swap from 2.73 to 3.23.....only beneficial if you stepped it up higher really. That's why I'm asking how different 2.73s are from the 3.23s.
Thanks in advance

That's tough. I had 2.73's in my 94 and it ran real strong except a couple of dead spots at 31-37 MPH and then again at about 90-100 MPH. It ran 14.1 @ 99 MPH w/2.1 60'. One of the freaks I've ran into ran a stock A4 w/2.73's to a 12.9X (LS1, obviously). Ask someone with 3.23's and they have a dead spot too, just not two of them. LS1 A4 3.23 Camaro's seem to have a "dead" spot at about 70 MPH. My buddy with 3.73's in his 94 LT1 w/headers/cai/catback PULLS on LS1's at that speed from a roll and hangs tough from a stop. It appears to me that 3.73 gears are the best thing for an A4 car. No dead spots, always pulls. Of course, add obligatory catback and lid for LS1...some folks even think an M6 car has a dead spot at about 35 MPH, nahhhh

No offense but you shouldn't ask what gear. Ask what mod will net me the nicest gain. THe answer you'll hear all day long is to get a Torque converter! I have one and love it. It'll drop .5 off the 1/4 mi which is a TON. There's a new brand on ls1.com called midwest converters. He's making great converters for 2/3's the price.
PS if any go to 3.42's
But try a new thread asking about converters!
