Fuel on E?

Ok, now i was woundering if a light would iluminate when the fuel level is reaching a very low level...in most cars the ligth is located right next to the E. I have been told that a light will illuminate when the fuel level gets very low but i am just currious what light will light up? The check guages light? The SES light? Thanks alot..i am just woundering because my fuel level guage is messed like most ls-1's it is very unreliable...like i will start my car shut it off and start it again and it says i just lost 1/8th of a tank

When your gas gets low enough, the check gauges light comes on. Thats on my 00 ss should be the same on yours.

Yeah you should get a check guages light which is on the far left of the instument cluster above the temp gauge I think.

ok thanks, thats what i thought, cause i was running low on oil one day and when i gassed it the check gauge light came on...but i didnt know if it worked for the fuel guage as well. The reason i am asking is because i have run it far past E and a check guage light has yet to come on I think the guage itself is messed, or out of calibration because the previous owner put white face guages on and i think he was a little off with the fuel one. By about 1/8 i think.

The 1998's don't have a light that illuminates when the gas gets low. Also the guages are accurate. However, the car industry changed them to read the way they do.When the guages read 100% accurate, people would bring the cars back complaining about bad gas mileage. So the industry changed the guages to stay at a higher level until about 1/2 a tank or so.Then the needle would drop faster than above 1/2 a tank. They did this with no other changes and the public said "thanks for fixing our cars ".Now if your drops every time you turn on-off the car, then something is wrong.Good luck.

why in the world would you run it low? you realize the gas is what cools you fuel pump and the pump will give out if not givin the right amount of fuel to splash on it

Once my light comes on I can go 35 miles, and then the tank will take a full 16 gallons, so there's not much left, maybe .5 gal

I don't reccommend it since you can pick up trash running that low.

There was only one time when my check engine light came on, and I drove for a few miles before refilling, and I put 14.5 gallons in, I think. So that's what, the two gallon mark when it comes on

yeah i know, but i am just trying to get the max ammount of gas for my buck here. I do realize that the fuel does cool the pump..its just my fuel guage is so inaccurate i cant really tell how much fuel i have in there

Nope, your check gauges light will not come on if you are low on gas. Believe me, I found out the hard way by running out of gas twice. Very dumb mistake that I will not make again. Also, you will get less miles out of your tank than most of the other guys here, because 98's had 15.5 gallon tanks, whereas the 99-and up have the 16.8 gallon tanks. Just fyi.
