Free Air Mod
I am not too mechanically savy , before I bought my 2002 A4 Z28, I had a 93 T-bird. Anyway, I have looked into the free mods pages, and I have seen the free ram air mod. I was just wondering if any of you think this is a dangerous / risky mod to do. In other words, does it really open up room for water to get in on a rainy day?
On a side note, I have been looking into getting a new lid as well. I have seen everyone mention different lids, all with good praise. I am uncertain of which way to go. I think the MTI lid looks cool as hell, but I would prefer a lid that shows the best performance. Is there much of a difference between lids concerning their performance, or do they all come run pretty close to one another? Also, is any lid favored by the free ram air mod over another?
Thanks for any input....this is a a totally different sport I'm dealing with here....I fear I could get pulled into this real quick!!

The main drawback to the FRA is that the air filter gets dirty faster, but that is to be expected due to more airflow across the filter. I have never heard of an LS1 engine getting hydrolocked by water through the FRA. I think the FTRA, which is an actual duct extention for the FRA, may have a history of hydrolock in very deep water.
As lids go, they are all the same performance wise. Price and even looks are different. IMO they are all overpriced cheap plastic... but you can't argue they make power. I definately recommend one along with the FRA.
Lastly, the exhaust side needs opened up too. You can either change the muffler or get a complete cat-back... either way you will make more power and if you are on a budget, just know that the muffler will make nearly as much hp as the cat-back for far less $$$$.
Good luck

I did the FRA mod on my 98Z and for every day driving I made a block-off plate out of thin sheet aluminum. If I want to take the plate out, all I have to do is take off the lid and filter, unscrew two small screws I made in the plate and slide it out, putting it back in is just as easy, takes about 5 minutes. Dusty conditions at work made me come up with this.
I have the direct flow lid and like it alot although they are all about the same.

look at the Volant, I think it gives me as much or more HL gain plus it looks cool.
