Which Flowmaster should i get???
Which Flowmaster should i get???
i need to run new exhaust and i'm going to do 3" with the y-pipe and headers i already have and i'm gonna get cut outs to...i' going to run some sort of flowmaster but should i spend the money and get the cat-back, save the money and get the 80 series crossflow(that doesn't sound that loud over the internet), or just get a regular 40 series muffler and put under the car...OR shoudl i run true dual 3" with dual flows??? thanks a lot
Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
First off, get ready for the responses from people who hate the flowmasters
. Flowmaster doesn't make the best flowing muffler, so if you're trying to squeeze every tenth you can out of the car, go ahead & bypass it for something more expensive that will "flow" better. However, if you are looking for a good sounding muffler to replace your stock one, I would recommend the 80 series cross-flow. On my '99, I left my stock rectangular tips on, and mine sounds very good.......I have gotten quite a few compliments on the sound, whether idling or raising he!! My '96 has the SLP Loudmouth, and I'm sure it out-flows the flowmaster, but the sound isn't much different on my cars; with either, nobody is going to think you have a stock muffler, I assure you
Just my 2 cents, however, lots of opinions on here!
Good luck with whatever you go with.

Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
Flowmaster mufflers were designed for the firing order of the gen II small block. The gen III small block has a revised firing order to reduce vibration. A side benefit is more power. Unfortunately, the new firing order causes havoc inside a Flowmaster. Pressure waves conflict with each other creating turbulence. A guy who is an engineer, on another board, did a computerized flow dynamics model on this a while back. The graphics clearly showed the reduced flow. Roger Cotton may have access to the info. Flowmasters still work good on LT1's and the other gen II motors. They probably work fine in true dual systems on gen III motors also. Anyway that is the science behind the low flow claim. There are alot of other mufflers out there that are engineered specifically for the newer motors.
Good luck,

Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
yeah SLP sounds good but i go on long trips a lot to and from school and i don't wanna fall asleep to the sound...it has LM on there now with no cats and long tube headers...for the "flow" problem, i'm putting cut-outs on it right after the headers(prolly electric ones) so that would solve that...plus i love the sound of flowmaster on a v8, the 40 series anyway...so really i was just wondering what setup to run(i.e. true duals, or cross-flow) i heard magnaflow sounds a lot like flowmaster, is this true??? thanks
Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
I was thinking about doing a 40 series delta flow (supposed to cut down interior resonance). A 3 inch in and dual out right before the exhaust heads over the axle. then run two pipes over the axle and out the back.
Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
Flowmasters generally don't flow as well as other mufflers for ANY car. I've never heard of the firing order having any affect, and I don't see how it would. LT1 guys all say Flowmasters flow worse than most other mufflers. However, no matter who you talk to, they will still outflow a stock muffler and provide a hp gain, mainly with mandrel bent piping. They also sound the best IMO for low buck systems.

Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
I might go as far as to say that the flowmaster muffler that i had on my car barely if at all outflowed the stock muffler. I dont beleive it did. I went with a Borla XR1 and wish i had done that to begin with.
Re: Which Flowmaster should i get???
I am having a local exhaust shop design a tue dual setup with 2.5inch exhaust. They reccomend the new muffler called the hushmaster. It works great for true duals due to the design of the muffler. Supposedly it's really quit until you go WOT then it comes alive! Check it out, it's kinda expensive though?
