Here is how I spent my first $500 and I was more then happy.

Lid $100 (installed myself)
Dynomouth exhaust $150 installed (installed at local muffler shop)
SSRA ram air kit $200 (installed myself)

That right there was $450 and made a night and day difference on how my car felt and sounded. After that I went with a 3500 stall torque converter and WOW what a difference that thing made

My exhaust components are in my sig along with a video if you want to hear it. I get quite a few compliments on it, but I love the way it sounds.

N for your first mod go with the exhaust. you 'll feel it and start turning heads.
