oil pressure dropping to zero and stalling

My brother in law has a 2000 camaro that has randomly stalled 3 times over the last couple months. In all cases, the check oil pressure light has come on. When he checks the gauge the pressure drops to zero right before the car stalls. This has happened ideling at a stop light as well as while on the freeway. Any one have any ideas why this would happen ?

not sure about the LSx but my LT1 would drop to very low pressure at idle due to the pickup falling off the oil pump.

My oil pressure drops like a rock under heavy acceleration in first gear. I always assumed that was due to starvation. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put the pickup in the front of the pan should be smacked.

Hopefully, your friend hasn't spun a bearing or something.

this has happened a few times and the car always starts right back up and runs normal pressure, so I dont think the pickup fell off. Do you think the oil pump or pressure sending unit might be going out ?

I'm surprised some aftermarket company hasn't already come up with something to fix that problem. Is this common?

The pickup in an F-body LS1 is not in the front of the pan. It's in the deep part in the rear.
Maybe your pickup tube o-ring is bad and you're sucking air thru that.

I guess I was thinking of the pickup tube bolt.

It only does it in first though. Wouldn't a bad o-ring do it in every gear?

Not sure about only in first gear, but the "O" ring failure is a fairly common problem on these cars.
