Finally joined you guys, newbie questions inside

I've been a member of this forum for over a year now, mostly lurking on the Kill Forum to provide info on DSMs. My plan was originally to go after an LS1 sometime next year as the Talon was starting to get up in mileage and I've wanted an F-Body since I was 18. Well last week I blew the engine in my Talon and rather than replace it, I decided to get something new. Say hello to the proud owner of a 2001 Camaro SS!

Picked her up from a local for $20,500 with 28000 miles. Fully loaded 6 speed. Let me just say that I am absolutely in love with this car. Now since I'm finally a member of the domestic side, I've got a couple of basic questions. I tried searching but didn't find exact answers. I've been a member of the DSM site for 3 years and I know how we can be towards newbies, so I'm putting my flame suit on now.

-Previous owner said the car has the full SLP package. What exactly does this include? I'm assuming at least exhaust because it does sound nice for being stock. And are these SLP parts good enough to keep or should I consider upgrading?

-ASR is traction control right? Is there a way to permanetly shut this off without having to turn it off every time I start the car?

-Moron question, but how can I tell what gears I have? I'm guessing 3.23s but would like to be certain.

-Check out this picture of the car. What is the exact name of this paint color?

-Last question. I'm not planning to go very far with this car as it's my daily driver and only ride, plus I'm in serious debt right now. My goal is to do a few of the basic bolt-ons and have a high 12 second car. Can anyone recommend any cheap products to reach this goal?

Thanks for any help guys, and damn it sure feels nice to finally be posting as one of you. These cars are incredible.

Congrats on the car. Thats a great price. Im looking at upgrading myself.

NBM = Navy Blue Metallic

Look for the code on the door. Should be GUX. I know GU5 is 3.23, but not sure of the others...

ASR is traction controll. SLP sells a module that shuts it off, and you have to hit the button when you want it on. I took my fathers cluster apart and removed the TRAC OFF light for him. Its so much nicer with out it. So with those 2 mods youll be all set..

Im sure every one else can help with the other stuff.

Aren't all SS's 3.42?

A full SLP package would include an auburn limited slip differential. The ones I've heard tend to whine a bit. It comes w/the SLP exhaust. They flow good and to me sound very good, but some people think they're too quiet. Nothing a cut out can't fix. It also comes with the SLP air cleaner lid. Much better than the stock POS. I still need to score me one. Haven't had my car over a month. I think there is more to the SLP package, so I'll let someone else fill in the blanks.

A mod I highly recommend if it hasn't already been done is the skip shift. I got mine with that hooked up still. Doesn't make it quicker just gets rid of an annoyance. Glad it is gone.

Very nice color. Couple things the previous owner said it had the full slp package; they were not very well informed. If that is a pic of your car then you have no chomre wheels & no SS grill so it can't be full of Y2Y options. No big deal though, slp is junk anyway so you don't want any of their stuff.

As far as gears, if you have a M6 you have 3.42's. If you have an A4, you have 3.23's.

You can buy a ASR reverse module but I wouldn't. I had it on my 01 SS & half the time it didn't work right. If you don't start your car a certain way it won't kick on. Just remember to turn it off, it won't kill you if you leave it on.

As far as mods to get you into the 12's. If you have a M6 & you're a good driver you could possibly get your stock car into the 12's. Otherwise get a lid & filter & some type of catback. Long tube headers will definitely help you get into the 12's if you aren't there already. I recommend a TSP lid with a Holly powershot airfilter. As far as ctaback, they are all very close except flowmaster. Magnaflow, GMMG, Borla, Loudmouth, Corsa, B&B are all good. As far as headers you really can't go wrong. They are priced differently but it's just depends on the quality you want. If you pay mroe your headers will be better made. You pay less you get power gains but the qulaity leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm not too familiar with all the SLP stuff but I believe if there were additional SLP options ordered then it should have a Y2Y RPO code, you'll see that on the drivers side door sticker (with all the other RPO codes). If there is a Y2Y then I believe there should also be an SLP sticker somewhere on the car (passenger side door maybe?) and that should list all of the SLP options that were ordered.

Yes, ASR is traction control (Acceleration Slip Regulation). As mentioned already, SLP sells a module that'll reverse it...you'll have to turn it on, instead of it having to turn it off.

Already mentioned, yep that's Navy Blue Metallic.

You have an M6 (6 speed) therefor you have 3.42s.

First, take it to the track and see where it's at right now. Never know, it very well could be capable of high 12s right now...or maybe all you'll need is a couple DRs.

Thumbs up

NBM SS... YUMMY!!!

Chrome rims are a must on that car. I wouldn't have mine any other way now that I have them.

Congrats on your purchase and enjoy!

Is it possible that I may have only certain SLP options? I test drove both a TA and WS6 and my exhaust sounds better than theirs did. Any way I can find out exactly for sure? I'd like to know all the correct info on my car.

Yeah that skip shift is a pain in the ***. Looks to be a pretty cheap fix though, will have to do that soon.

It's great that it takes such few mods to get these things into the 12's.

red91tsiawd- not anything huge; T28, 3" turboback exhaust, upper IC pipe and MBC. Was looking for mid 13s this summer but oh well. It's a blessing in disguise I guess.

Did I mention I absolutely ****ing love this car!

these are all the Slp options for the ss.

Hurst 6 speed shifter

center mounted exhaust or dual dual exhaust

17" chrome rims

auburn rear differential

blackwing lid

Stage II bilstein suspension package

SS front grill

SS deck mat

SS embroidered floor mats

SS dash plaque

(i might have forgotten one or two, but i dont think i have)

yes NBM very nice color
i dont think you have the stage II bilstein suspension, because your car doesnt look like it has it. I could be wrong though (they sit about 1 inch lower than normal SS's)

there should be a list of them on the passenger side door (I think

anyways congrates on the new purchase!!!!!!!!

what exhaust do you have?

If it has 2 exits and has chrome tips then it is the stock SS exhaust.

If it has 2 on either side, or..Has flasking with 2 big ovel exits under the license plate then it is the SLP one.
