fast idle?

I tried the search and couldn't find anything. My car has always ran around 700 rpm at idle. i haven't driven the car for a while. When i took it out for a nice sunday drive, it starts and idles fine, but when i actually put it in gear and drive, when i come to a stoplight or something it idles at like 1200 rpm. shut the car off try again, same thing. The only thing i can think of that happened with the car is i might have hit the rev limiter but most likely not while driving earlier that day. I have checked my airlid and filter, no loose hoses or anything like that....please help with any ideas. I have also disconnected the battery. My cats sound like they might possibly be going bad, could this cause any problems related to this? Thanks for any help you can give me. Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: fast idle?

If you haven't driven the car in a few weeks/months it'll do that for a few days. Fuel/timing was probably a bit mixed up.

Re: fast idle?

he man i had put my car away for the winter and when i went to get it like a month ago i had the same problem. when i started it it idled high when i gave it some gas it went up to like 2500 rpm and stayed there. and i was like what the hell the funny thing was it was in my grampas driveway and it was offly loud i didnt know what to do so i turned it off and started it back up same problem. i check everythihg like u did and nothing then i went over to the computer and unpluged the 3 plugs on the left side "if you where facing the car" of the car. the car then shut off on its own i plug back in and then started it back up and no problems checkingen was on for a lil then went away that weekend i had went to emmitions and passed so i was all good. i also know a kid who has a 02 and had same problems and he just ran it for like 45 min and the problem went away. i think that the computer has to relearn all its habits. well i hop this was a lil helpfull.

Re: fast idle?

Might have been doing that to get the voltage back up in the batt..The alt adds a load and the comp compensates for it by upping the idle a little. VIA, IAC motor...

Like what was said above, mixtures might have been a little screwed up too..

Mine does that when I haven't driven her in a while..
