Question Engine rattle - help

Hi

My engine has just developed a rattle - not a knock or clunk, but a metallic rattle. I only notice it when slowing down in gear and the revs drop through the range 1500 to 1000. Everything sounds fine above and below this and the rattle isn't there when accelerating up through the revs (enough if done slowly). It's like as if there is something rattling (valves, lifters, cams) when the engine is slowing down not under pressure. Performance appears to be as aggressive as ever.

Any ideas??? I've booked it in for a checkup next week b ut would like your opinions before I get fed a load of bull by the garage.

Thanks

Gary

Question

Thanks, I'll get underneath tomorrow and check it out. I suppose I have been driving it harder recently (it's just so good at 130-140mph ).

Any other ideas are welcomed.

Other incidental info: Oil Pressure is normal, oil and filter changed regularly (Mobil 1).

Unhappy

Just had a chance to get the car up on a ramp. Everything underneath is A1. Nothing loose, and all looking solid and very clean for 20,000 miles.

The damn noise is still there. A definite tapping rattle between 1500 to 1000 rpm. I say it this was cos it's only there when slowing down with the car in gear. If I push the clutch the noise rapdly goes away.

I need your help/ideas with this so that I can either get it fixed or accept it as normal.

Thanks for any suggestions

Gary

I have the exact same problem...EXACT.

I have an A4 and when I slow down (not all the time) to 1000-1500 RPM I have a metallic rattling (like a bean in a aluminum can). It does it every so often, but I notice it more after a highway drive of 80-90mph.

I having the car checked out on the 29th of this month (excessive vavletrain noise and rattle) and I will let you know if they find anything.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix? There's got to be someone out there who corrected this.

Question

I have an '02 SS with the M6. When I take off in 1st gear sometimes I don't bring the RPM's up and the engine gets ready to just about to stall. At this point when the engine is about to stall I let out the clutch completely and I here a rattle but it goes away as I accelerate. Maybe it is something in the throwout bearing or clutch I don't worry too uch about it. I only have about 5,800 miles.
