electric water pumps???

I have question about elec. water pumps for my 02z28. Will I need electric fan(s)? Meziere advertises that their elec. pumps will not require you to change your serpentine belt. wtf? I thought the whole point was to decrease the work load of your engine therefor increasing hp. What do electric water pumps use to run? A battery operated motor, your alternator, a belt? I need general knowledge about this mod please.

Re: electric water pumps???

Dude, you already HAVE electric fans! (2, to be exact). An electric water pump will be a draw on the electrical system (it'll put more load on your alternator) but the pulley turning the water pump will be free'd up, and I imagine there is probaby "slightly" more power to be gained than there would be lost? (although the parasitic loss difference could be negligable?? ). I think electric pumps are as much to do with keeping the engine cool while idling as much as they are for freeing up power though. There was another thread talking about electric pumps recently, and I know someone said their advantage is they're always running the same speed, whether idling or full throttle, as compared to conventional water pumps that vary with engine RPM.

Meziere puts an idler pulley on the front of the pump so that the stock serpentine will still work. If you'd look under the hood of your car you'd know why.

I'm aware of what's under my hood. I just didn't know if Meziere had a free spinning pulley on the front of the pump or not. The question still stands, do these pumps run off of your alternator or an electric motor you have to buy seperately?

hm...does an electric water pump run on an electric motor

nope they run on an exhaust driven turbine...kindda like a turbo.

not to be really rude, but if you have to ask questions like these...you need to do ALOT more research, reading, and NOT be modding your car yet.

I'm dissappointed in you teke. you've always given good advice, at least to me, and never talked down to me.

sorry crappy mood....got a little sarcastic

maybe it was just the way you were asking the questions...

the electric water pump is that...a pump, driven by an electric motor, that is all built into one unit.

it is electric...so it runs on 12v power, which would be drawn from the battery which is charged by the alternator.

does that help?

Re: electric water pumps???

I'm actually doing what you suggest by going on this site(and others) I knew nothing about auto mechanics 2 months ago. Now I still know nothing, but at least I'm getting somewhere. I ask tons of questions, most probably dumb ones, to further my knowledge. I'm not gonna get an ewp. I just want to know the facts about it to be more informed. It's too expensive, not enough gains, Im a daily driver, and I've had 2 engines burn up on me, so I am very cautions about the cooling system. Yeah teke that helps. I look forward to seeing what you write, and always pay attention when you chime in. thanks

It runs off the alternator which charges the battery
