Dynoed Today....Car would not stay in 3rd gear!!!!
Ok Fellas,
Every one knows you are not supposed to dyno your automatic in overdrive right?
Today we placed the car on the dyno and putting the tranny in drive only (not OD)
and rolling it out, the car went from 1st to 2nd then went from 2nd straight to OD WTF???
The dyno tech said he had not dynoed any LS1 a-4s , but he was sure this was not supposed to happen. We had the Tech2 hooked up and all readings were fine, but even the tech2 showed it skipped a gear and went straight into OD.
The Dyno tech told me that something was not right and I should take my car in for service at the local dealer.
He also noted that my car was pegging the speedometer and showing 160+ mph on the computer screen which tells you right there that it was most definately in OD.
A friend of mine said that he thought it was something in the cars PCM programming that tells the car to do this and he didnt think I had a problem.
If my car had a tranny problem I dont think It would be pulling 8.50s in the 1/8th mile would you?
Has any of you guys experienced this ?
Thanks for any help.
Mike

The tech must be wrong. With 2.73 gears, if you are hitting 160 mph, then you are in 3rd. You won't hit 160 in OD in a 2.73 car. A 3.23 car will hit 160 in OD. On a dyno, a 3.23 A4 will top out at 120 mph or so, and a 2.73 gear A4 will stop at 155-160 mph.
It could have been lock-up kicking in. That resembles a shift into another gear. Lock-up usually only works in Drive or Over-Drive. That may not be what happened, but it's a thought.
