I bought my car about 3 weeks ago and took it down the road today to have it dynoed. My car has 14,000 miles on it and it's a A4. Anyways, the dynoe charted me putting down 295 rwhp and 318 rwtq. Is this about right? I thought that was pretty good considering my car is completely stock. The shop told my the dynoed an 01 Z-28 just yesterday and it only put down 264 rwhp. So either that car was sick, or my car just runs really well?????

 

2001-2002 usually average ~300rwhp, some less, some more, 98-00s usually average right about where you're at (again, some less, some more), so yeah, you're pretty much there. Any ls-1 that dynos 264 rwhp needs a tune-up or a molitov cocktail.

 

Looks about right to me. Something is definitely wrong w/that other car though.

 

that is pretty good. i dont know what mine was completely stock. but with the mti lid and loudmouth my 00 Z28 A4 dynoed at 304hp. so thats pretty good man..

 

Yeah I thought that sounded LOW for an 01 Z-28. I dunno how the cars been driven or how many miles it had on it. But something was def. wrong there. Anyways, thats only my first run. What I didnt tell you guys is that I bought Flowtech LT's, Random Tech High Flo Cats and an SLP Y-pipe. They just ran the car to see what a difference all the new exhaust bolt on's would make. They are telling me the car should be ready on Friday because they are waiting for the 02 extensions to come and some other bracket. And im prolly gonna go buy a K&N Filter for it too and slap it in there before they do the next couple runs. Anyways, Ill keep you guys posted and let you know how it turns out!

 

O yeah, almost forgot!.... My car does have a Flowmaster on it. I didnt put it on there, it was on there when i bought the car. Is it worth another 300$ to buy another muffler? Will I see any gains other than maybe a couple HP? Or do you think ill be alright if I just stick with the Flowmaster?

 

I dont see the flowmaster hurting you enough to make you have to go change it.
The type of dyno is important.. Often people try to compare Dynojet and Mustang brand dyno numbers when they dyno differently.

on a dynojet, my car puts down 320/337 bone stock down to paper filter.

on a mustang dyno, I know the number will be a bit lower.. I am waiting for a chance to visit a local shop and get on both of their dynos to see the difference.

When they are doing the exhaust work have them put a cutout on it. Make some runs with it closed, then open it up. Then you'll know just exactly how much hp the Flowmaster is costing you.

 

Sounds about right for 01+ car, I guess. They all usually seem to be a tad over/under 300hp.

My 00 made 297/309 stock, though.

Sounds good for a stock A4. My 01 M6 put down 331rwhp and 348rwtq with lid and GMMG exhaust.

 

that would not be accurate on any exhaust at all..
Adding a cutout is going to pull some backpressure away costing you torque..

By opening and closing it, regardless of your muffler, you wont see any difference that correlates to the flow of the muffler.

A better experiment would be to have several mufflers and intermediate pipes and just attach, make a pass remove attach another, make a pass, remove... repeat.

Flow testing is usually how most companies will rate their mufflers.. I think it best to see how each works on 1 car. get 5 and test them on 1 car and see for yourself.

That is the biggest myth/wives tale a going and everyone wants to keep it going for some reason.
Reducing backpressure will MOVE the torque peak but it WILL be the same.
Moving it up the rpm band some makes a persons seat of the pants dyno say that he LOST torque. Not true. I've seen many dyno sheets disproving the myth.
