Dumb but serious Air Lid question

Ok I need someone to school me on why most aftermarket airlids need an breather filter? I have a 2000 LS1 and it says I need one. I noticed the SLP doesn't require it. Is there something that I have to remove or what not.

I don't have a aftermarket lid and now am getting one. I know its something that I should have done a loooong time ago, but I just thought it was a simple mod and I put it off. I tried a search but did find anything that answered my question.

the breather is for EGR, SLP makes a lid that loops this into the airlid like the stock one. All the aftermarket ones make one lid for all years, and just make you get a breather for the EGR tube. Its ur choice, I would go with the generic lid for flow reasons, but if you want the SLP logo, then get SLP. Hope I answered ur questions.

It is actually for the A.I.R. pump, the 98-99 had no filtration for the A.I.R. and it went to crap fast. The 2000-2002 has the intake hose for the A.I.R. come out of the airbox.

Thanks for your replies guys.

so what do I to hose if I get a generic one, zip tie it?

isn't it just going to hang there? That kinda sucks.

Based on what I have read, I am little skeptical that lids vary that much in flow. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I drilled a small hole and zip-tied it down. Isn't very noticable.

Yup, it's for the A.I.R. pump. I say just get rid of the thing and cap it off, personally.

I'm right there with you man. I just bought the SLP blemished lid and plugged the hose right into the box. I never knew what the heck it was for.

That would explain it...

I first bought my car the end of July, and I could swaer it makes more noise when I first start it up. I can hear like some extra hissing from the engine compartment for about 5 min. after I first start it up, then it quits. I didn't worry about it, but that must be it. The AIR pump.... anybody familiar with how the thing works, or if and how we can remove it?

I'm running the MTI lid with a breather filter on the hose to the AIR pump. However, rather than zip-tie the hose to the radiator support, I got under the car and cut the hose off about 2" from the AIR pump and put the filter there.

It really makes the engine bay look cleaner than having a hose and filter strapped out-of-place.

One more vote for a lid is a lid is a lid. I got the SLP "blemished" lid for $75. Don't have to worry about the extra filter and its by far the least expensive. Also, I can see what they are calling the "blemish" but I am amazed that they even point it out because I doubt anybody would even notice if they didn't point it out on thier site. For what its worth, I would just get the one you think looks good and fits into your price range. For me, I really like the looks of the slp lid and as I said you can't beat the price.
