dual exhaust options

I have a 99 vert, lowered 1.5", and I'm thinking about fabing a true dual exhaust setup this summer when we get our lift installed, and I get a set of pacesetter LT's. My question:

Are 3" duals going to make THAT much of a difference compared to 2.5" duals?

2.5 would be much easier to work with and I dont think I'll mod my car much more than bolt-ons, maybe a cam in the future. I just think 3'' on each cylinder bank for a not-so-high HP setup would be more trouble than its worth with clearence and banging all the time.

edit: also, does stainless have that much of an advantage over steel?

2.5" duals will support 450hp with ease.

you'll be fine with that setup, and the clearance will be better...which you'll need every bit of.

full stainless would be $$ and not really needed. aluminized steel will last a LONG time.

Run mandrel bent 3" pipes until you get near the major obstructions (axle). Then, go down to mandrel bent 2.5" pipes. It would flow better than all 2.5" piping. Even with that said, the 2.5" pipe will support a lot of power.

Re: dual exhaust options

if you are looking for some mufflers, I have 2 mufflers for classic chambered that are 2.5 in diameter. I am looking to sell both for $70 shipped. I was going to to true duals system, but never got around to it. The mufflers are brand new, never been used.

Re: dual exhaust options

BMR panhard relocation kit, allows true duals over the axle up to 3 inches...

I ordered a kit, coming in next week for me...

I'm going 2.5 inch from the cats to the tips, the tips I'm ordering are chrome versions of my stock z28 box tips. Going for the I'm stock sleeper look...

2.5" is what you want. the 3" will be alot louder, and give less clearance, and cost you some low rpm torque to boot.

So untill you hit about 450HP, I won't be exhaust bottlenecked. Thanks for the replies! hey Plaque, I'll keep that in mind, I won't be doing anyhting 'till later this summer of course, but if you still have them I might be in touch.

Re: dual exhaust options

If i ever went with true duals on an F-body, i'd get a 3" ORY, cut off the Y, put in a 3" X pipe, and two 3" pipes with a couple bullet mufflers and pre-axle dumps. No bends after the X pipe join. It's the easiest one possible, pretty cheap, and you'll never have to mess with it again.

With what kind of mufflers though? I don't really want a straight through design, because I'm trying to keep sound down, without much loss in performance, I was thinking of maybe 2 40's flowmasters?

You can have a straight through design without a crazy loud result. Dynomax ultra flows are very quiet for their design. flowmaster 40s will be much more obnoxious by comparison.

Just because the muffler is more restrictive, doesn't always mean it reduces noise, drone, or sounds better. Flowmaster is a case in point.

If you want even more quiet though, i would recommend some magnaflow 4x11's or Hooker aerochambers.
