Driveshaft?????

Can anyone explain to me what exactly is the drive shaft? I called the dealership to get find out what kind of driveshaft the Z28s had and he told me a 342 rear end. now does that mean the drive shaft is the rearend or has to match up to a 342 rearend.
Just wondering if changing the drive shaft in the car means making it posi? or would i still need a new rearend?

Ummm... YEAH.. LOL

The drive shaft is the long rod running from the end of the transmission to the rearend. It gets rotated by the transmission and in turn is what turns the rearend gears so that the car will move. The guy at the dealership was either an idiot or just didnt understand what you were asking. I am not 100% sure but I believe Z28's have an aluminum DS.
