It's not "backfiring" it's unburned fuel in your exhaust exploding.

First of all, if it is coming out of your exhaust it is not a "backfire". A backfire is exactly that - back-fire. This means your intake charge is shot back up through the intake, ignited or not.

It's just an exhaust crackle....nothing even close to a backfire.

backfire

Due to factory programing (cold fuel enrichment) your vehicle is not stumbling coughing or hesitating (carb era vehicles ran like crap cold) The engine runs excelent cold due to excess fuel. the only side effect is the burning of the unburnt fuel in the exhaust.
I put headers (flp) hi flow cats (flp) and 4'' back w/spintech muffler on 2000 T/A ws6 that car poped hard on decel much worse cold.

All in all enjoy the wicked exhaust note of your car I love the sound of the LS-1 (including the morning wake up pop the neighbors love it too)

I had a carb'd car and it ran perfect hot or cold. Started right up with the turn of the key, zero cranking time, even on 0 degree days.
