Do I really need to spend $150 on an oil pump?

Do I really need a ported, polished, balanced, blueprinted blah blah blah oil pump you find everywhere for around $150? Would I be just as well off switching to an LS6 oil pump you can get for 60 bucks from GM parts Direct?

I would, just because $150 is a whole lot less than a motor rebuild. If you're in there, put in new parts.

The ported pump is overkill. The stock pumps supply plenty of pressure and volume for any streetable engine. They are like gold plated valve covers....they are nice to have but hardly a necessity.

I bought one from Thunder Racing for my build up.

I had understood that the main purpose of the work done on an LS1/6 pump was the honing and polishing of the pressure relief valve bore. To keep it from sticking open and trashing your engine as many have done.
