Different Backfire issue

HELP! Different Backfire issue, Dealer not helping!
I have a totally stock(with the exception of a K&N air filter) 2000 SS LS1 with a 6-speed. The car has 50K miles on it. The car is typically only driven from June to September, and the rest of the year sits in the garage, where I start it and run it for about 10-15mins once a week.
Last year a "problem" started where it would let out a small backfire through the exhaust when the engine was reving down either when I upshifted, or downshifted. More specifically, if I downshifted, say, from 3rd to 2nd and the revs were above 2200rpm it would let out a few pronounced pops out the back. As soon as the revs dropped to 2200prm, the engine was smoother, and the backfire or popping was completely gone.
When I upshift through the gears, it also happens if I shift above the 2200rpm mark, and in both cases it's more pronounced, the higher the revs are.
This condition also seems to be more pronounced when the car is still warming up.
I took the car to the local Chevy dealer last year, took him for a test drive, and he told me "it's normal for these cars", but it was not hapenning before, so I have a hard time accepting this. Is it a timing thing? Like I said, nothing on the car has been altered, no check engine light. I'm leary about a lot of the local dealers, as they all just seem to want to gouge as many $$ as they can from me, and then have no solution.
Sorry for being so wordy, but any suggestions out there?

Thanks Al. Yeah, I considered that as well. The exhaust is the SLP stainless set up. Like I said, often times it is more than just a pop, and it does occur on decell, when warm as well, and also on upshift.
I forgot to mention that the fuel economy has dropped as well. I used to get approx 400kms on a tank city/hwy, and now it's about 340-350 kms. And just like most people, when a suspected problem surfaces, I think it's a little down on power as well.
I'm fishing now, but any suggestions are appreciated.
