Post descreening MAF

I'm cleaning my FIPK and looking at this huge screen of the MAF. I remember everyone saying they have taking it out correct? So you don't need it, does it do anything. And if I should take it out what's the best way?
Thanks, I'm in the middle of the job right now

The screen is there to straighten out the airflow coming in. I've descreened mine and have had no ill effects nor any distinct advantage. Given that these cars have nearly linear air flow into the throttle body through the intake, no straightening is really required. Take a look at a newer Corvette (2002+, Z06 specifically) and you'll see that they don't have screens either.

If I were to look at it again, I wouldn't have descreened mine.
