'De-screening' MAF
'De-screening' MAF
Hey guys, I know I am new here but have some input.
Descreening the MAF may or may not help performance. BUT, I can tell you why it is there. I can say with 100% accuracy that it is there to straighten the flow and smooth out turbulance.
I work in the aerospace field and more specifically with wind tunnels. Tunnels use the same exact method to straighten the flow and tone down tubulance. If you look you will see it is actually a honeycomb and not a screen. There is actually some exact ratio of length to diameter that those tubes have to be to achieve this.
They want to straighten the flow and knock out turbulance so that the MAF (called a hot wire probe in tunnels) and accurately measure the velocity of the air going by it. More accurate the reading, the better informed the computer is to what is going on. Aftermarket Lids go a long way to help with this whole process as well.
I am NOT an LS1 expert by any means, but I do know a thing or two about airflow.

Re: 'De-screening' MAF
This will help some of the guys tring to get MAF information. So thanks for helping those guys out. Information is just better when it comes from someone in a particular field. You may be new but, your knowlege will serve people here.
