Curious what happens if you stall when in gear...
You know those times when you start thinking about something, and you can't rest until you know the answer? Well here's one of them...
Lets say, hypothetically of course, that you're driving an M6, in 6th gear, and highway speed for example. What would happen if the engine died while in gea? Would it sound like its still running since its still in gear, but just come to a stop? Would you not hear the engine at all?
Also, does stalling out damage anything? Like if you just dont give it enough gas, or forget its in gear and let the clutch out?
Just one of lifes mysteries I would like to know the answer to.

I am not sure what exactly your asking, but here goes. If you stall somehow or the car suddenly dies on the highway, without pressing the clutch in, the car will slowly decelerate and the rpms will fall on the tach, you will still hear the car untill it gets pretty slow. This could happen if somehow a few of your spark plugs just fell out of the car. Stalling out every now and again hurts nothing, but your self esteam. now if you were on the highway and you you turned the key all the way to off. Now this would be bad. Hope that helps
actualy that would be totaly dependant on speed. at 70 MPH you could shift into 2nd and not damage anything. it would be pointless, and you might wonder who hit the brakes, but at that speed (assuming of course stock gearing/tire size) you would only be turning about 5600 RPM in second.
Keep slamimg the car from 6th gear to 2nd or even third, and i assure you that will certainly damage a lot. Go ahead test it out, and get ready to throw in a clutch a lot sooner and those syncros that are known for not being the strong point of the trans, they'll take one hell of a beating too.
