The sensor is probably dead. Our cars coolant sensor tends to do this.

Cool Don't feel "left out" - it seems to be a '98 & '99 fun fact !

Mine is on it's 3rd one ( '99 SS ), and when it is below ~ 70 outside it will come on. I wait 'til the temp gauge is at a 1/4, then restart the car and it goes away !

I think that you can wipe the thing off, and the light will go off - I'm gonna get to it one of these days !

Go here:

This is from this fantastic web site:

At any rate, good luck !

You might try removing the sensor and cleaning it. Sometimes the "crud" in the coolant can cause it to malfunction/stick.

Definitely check out the previously posted link

for a nice picture and instructions on how to remove it.

A buddy of mine had a '99 SS , and had the same problem. He unplugged the sensor, and no more light.

There is apparently something else wigging out.

Trick is, I don't have a clue as to what it could be.

To answer the cost question, I think it was around $50.00.

Not too horrible, but I would not spend the money if that is not truly your problem.

Oh - here is a thought - perhaps after you unplug it, the trouble codes need to be cleared ?

Have ya tried running by Auto Zone - they will pull trouble codes for free.

Sorry that I have more questions than answers !
