Cool to run defroster and such w/o A/C Compressor

My A/C Compressor developed a crack. The A/C belt has since been removed. Is it safe to turn on my defroster and hot/cold air fans and just not run A/C?

EDIT: If so, is it alright to just completely remove the A/C compressor .. will it's absence have any adverse effects?

I sure hope it's cool 'cause my compressor is on the storage shelf.

the blower motor still works to blow air across the evaporator. but without the AC compressor, you do not the the cold air or the dehumidifying effect when trying to defrost.

It'll work OK, I took the compressor and other parts off one of my cars after the condenser developed a leak, but if you've any intention of ever getting the AC running again, you need to keep the pipes and evaporator free from corrosion and moisture, and with the system open that's almost impossible.

Thanks for the offer flippin but I really only plan on replacing it as I never use the A/C and would only replace it if I need to sell my car and that's not going to happen too soon.

pg318, what steps can be taken to keep moisture out of the system if the A/C compressor is removed?

You need a blanking plate to bolt over the ports on the connector block (I can't remember if your has the block with 2 o-rings that connects to the compressor ports), and draw down a vacuum on the system to evacuate any moist air in it... but I never bothered on my car, I just removed the condenser, and since the cost was more than I wanted to pay to replace it, I took out the accumulator, all the plumbing and called it a weight reduction... surprising how heavy the pipes are.

if i were you.. i would just remove the belt and unplug the compressor... i dont' t hink it will throw an ses light.... that way.. you can keep the corrosion away and keep the system dry. unless you've already removed the compressor... just my $.02
