I am planning my next mods. I have an A4 and I want 3.73's and also I want to put in a torque converter. What do you guys recommend, or have good experience with? If you could give me an idea on price that would be cool too. Also, Do I need any other little additions with these mods? Car description and other mods in sig. Thanks!

No one has any input on this? Thinking I prolly need 4000-4800 stall torque converter. Someone explain STR to me. I am not by any means a car expert.

As far as getting gears, I'd say Motive is the way to go. That or some GM gears.

A 4000 stall is pretty big, you'd need a hell of a lot of suspension work to hook, not to mention a 12 bolt rear end. Before getting a stall, you have to ask yourself these questions: Am I making an all out drag car? Any gear changes planned? (already answered) Will this still be a daily driver or just street car? Just stuff like that. In my opinion your best bet would be going with a 3200 stall. That seems to be one of the most popular sizes, and best working. As far as brands, I'm an M6 guy, so I don't know a whole lot. I've never heard anything bad about Yank though.

 

Although im also an m6 guy, id say go with the vigilante, itll be good for a .5 second. The 3.73's are a good question. I went with motive 4.10s cause theyre like a gm gear. Im sure you could get a strange, but then your looking at some gear whine...

 

4,000 is too big IMO. i would get a nice Percision Industries converter(3,200 stall) and some 3.73's or 4.10's.
then do some LCA's, airlid and the free mods and that should be plenty to start u off. mabey exhaust too if u want. hope this helps.

Well Lori a 3.73 will really wake up your car, so regardless of what converter you go with I would recommend it. As far as a converter a 4400 stall is the max I would run, that converter will work great for N/A car. Drivability will suffer but most people who get higher stall converters soon upgrade to something higher. If you plan on running nitrous, or a turbo I wouldnt recommend going more than 3800 stall. With any converter I would recommend getting a TA rear girdle and some Lower Control Arms with relocation brackets. As far as brands for converters I would recommend either vigilante for a lower stall or a Yank converter if your looking in the 4000+ rpm range. And for Lower control arms and relocation brackets I would recommend BMR. Youll also need a Trans Go shift kit and some programming for the trans, which youll also need if you swap to a 3.73 gear so it properly shifts. You live in the Midwest so I would recommend www.mfba.org its a local group with great people. One of our members Holly(Fast A4) has a 00 Formula A4 with a 3.73(on 10 bolt), 4400 stall, headers, true duals exhaust, full suspension, and slicks. She ran just last month of 11.60 no aftermarket heads, cam, or nitrous. So hop on over there if you want shes a really nice girl(dont tell her I called her one) and very helpful.

One question, for those saying over 4000 stall is to high, I still want pretty good street driveability, and with a stall in the 3200-3800 range, I am under the impression that this puts the car in that questionable zone as far as shifting is concerned. Like for most surface street driving, its always right at that speed where the TC is kicking in, kinda like the feeling you get when driving uphill at 40mph in 6th gear, with all the shuddering. I still want really good street drivability, but also I want the peower when I need it at the track.
