Clicking Sound

I have a 02 z m6. Whenever I start it up I can hear a clicking sound. When I open the hood the sound is not to loud but still audible on the driver side. It seems to be louder underneth the car. Nothing seems like its loose. Any ideas on what it could be.?? Also some times after a hard run theres a weird smell but no smoke or anything like that.

Re: Clicking Sound

Does it go away after the car warms up? Could be a bad case of piston slap, blown header or manifold gasket, (they tend to make clicking sounds when they leak), or a lose rocker? Just use the process of elimination and you'll figure it out.

Re: Clicking Sound

No it doesnt go away after warming up. But now that you mentioned it does sound like its somewhere near the exhaust manifold. Its a constant clicking that goes away at around 2000 rpm but when the revs go back down it starts again

Here are a couple possible solutions from my Haynes Repair Manual.

MIscellaneous engine noises.

3. An overlapping metallic noise that increases in intensity as the engine speed increases, yet diminishes as the engine warms up indicates abnormal piston and cylinder wear (see chapter 2). To locate the problem cylinder, (my trick) use a long screwdriver and place tip on effect area, with handle end close to your ear.

4. A rapid clicking noise that becomes faster as the engine accelerates indicates a worn piston pin or piston pin hole. This sound will happen each time the piston hits the highest and lowest points in the stroke. The procedure for locating the problem is above under my trick.

6. A rapid tapping sound or clicking sound that becomes faster as the engine speed increases indicates "valve tapping" or stuck valve lifters. Using the hose or screwdriver method while scanning over the rocker arm cover should indicate where or what lifter is having the problem.

Or it's an exhaust leake comeing from the exhaust manifold.

(I wanted to put my Haynes manual to work, I haven't had to use it yet.)

Re: Clicking Sound

Mine makes the same little clicking noise you are talking about but my problem is the belt tensioner.

My 03 truck and 00 Formula has this noise but the 98 SS doesn't.
I'll start the truck up to hook the trailer on and it'll be tick tick tick tick while it's idling. If I raise the revs it goes away then sometimes returns when it drops back to idle. But if I shut it off and restart the noise is gone. And it does sound more prevalent under the the front of the vehicle. The Formy is way to loud to hear it anymore

Re: Clicking Sound

If it goes away and comes back at idle it's 100% that it's a colapsed lifter. Get those lifters out and while you're at it change the cam.

Re: Clicking Sound

Mine has the same problem, (noise coming from driver side) not really that noticeable though until I am in a closed area (ie:the grage or a drive thru) Mine is definitely a leak from the exhaust manifold, most likely from the manifold gasket....

NOT.................. 100% sure on an internet diagnosis, never heard it run. NOPE

Mine is a very light tick and it's coming from the lower front of the vehicle. Last I knew that's not where the lifters are.

Re: Clicking Sound

Sorry, didn't read the rest of your post. But I have had a problem very simular to that where the ticking went away after reving the engine and it was infact the lifter. The sound generally came from the intake part of the engine even though the location of a sound can be hard to distinguish sometimes.

Clicking Sound

I've heard this same thing, only possible additon would be my earlier post about SES Code 0442 (EVAP - lean fuel) which I had cleared at Autozone. Anyone get this code along with this problem?

And lets say it is anyone of these things, whic is the worst to have - I would think the lifters????

Re: Clicking Sound

Well guys thanks for the responses. I took it into the dealership and it turns out that a spark plug had broken loose. They tightened it up and it sounds good now.

Re: Clicking Sound

Odd flippin sounds...my dads '02 Z28 does this on warm up, we are thinking a bad lifter? seems that these cars are notorious for clicks. I have my 1988 formy 350 with 140k and a grand ole engine....gotta love the iron block

Mine just left the shop last week, turned out one of my oil pump o rings broke off and got stuck on the screen which somewhat restricted oil flow......works like a champ now no more ticking.
