A catback...

Yo

I hear all this catback talk... but I never really totally understood it. It affects sound and hp a little, but what is the real purpose of it? I hear gutted cat, this cat, that cat... god dammit what does it all mean?!?! L0L

Sorry fellas...

Cat-backs are exhaust systems that you can buy in the aftermarket that bolt on to your car behind the catalytic converters (aka cats). The cats are what make your exhaust "friendlier" to the environment. Naturally, cats are restrictive and that is why some people gut them (remove the internals with a drill bit or pipe). Once a cat is gutted, it's no longer emissions friendly...but it flows a lot better. That's what your after - getting rid of restrictions in the exhaust flow to free up horsepower. In the same respects, this is what an aftermarket (cat-back) exhaust system does. It opens up the exhaust for better flow. With the added flow comes a louder exhaust note that each company tunes differently. That's why a Loudmouth doesn't sound anything like a Corsa. One uses a resonator and the other uses a unique muffler design.

If I missed anything, I'm sure someone can fill ya in. Hope this helps.

Aight... that definitely helps, then is there anything better than a gutted cat? All emissions aside that is... its better flow right? Thanks

Anything better than a gutted cat....yes. Off-road pipes are better. They're just exhaust tubing that goes in place of the cats. You can either buy them from companies like Mufflex or you can get custom ones made at an exhaust shop that is willing to do the job. The problem with going to an exhaust shop is they won't always be willing to help you considering you're new deleted cat mod will be breaking emissons laws.

The best option to go with long tube headers, but that's a bit more $$$.

Pacesetter headers are only 350 for long tube headers AND Y-pipe............ thats less than a cat back and good for 20 hp! you can als get a cutout for 30 and thats good for 10 hp plus you can wake anyone up on ur block

What does the long tube headers have to do with a cat? Does the headers extend all the way to it? So Long Tubes kind of 86 the cat? Or am I totally wrong? L0L
