Catalytic Conv. bad

That blasted thing has a mind of it's own. The SES comes on and I schedule an appointment because it's still under warranty. When it's time to take the car in, the stupid light turns off and they won't fix it because it's working again.

Now after a month, it's back on. I think i'm just gonna wait it out and see if it turns off again.

Doesn't the PCM store the code? Was it P0420? Seems like there's been alot of discussion on this lately.

Code P0420 Cat. Efficiency low, bank 1

Is it common problem or something?

A friend of mine just had this code on his 2000Z, dealer replaced driver's side cat at no cost. Should be covered under emissions warranty. If the code is stored and/or SES light is on you should be able to get it replaced free. Did a search, guess it was another board.

How long is the GM emissions warranty? Is it the same as the bumper to bumper?

Federal emission coverage is only for certain parts. The warranty booklet that came with my car shows catalytic converters warranted for 8 years/80K.

Could be the gas your using. If I put 87 oct. in my car the light comes on...believe it or not!! I don't care what anyone says, 93 oct. gas is far superior to 87oct. and I get much better gas mileage:
comparison:
87 octane = 12 mpg city 25 mpg hwy. SES light on
93 octane = 17 mpg city 30 mpg hwy. SES light off 20 cents more per gallon this is only $2 more pure full tank.

93 octane burns much clearer and thus less gunk in your engine and exhaust system.

Could be your Air pump as well. I've had both Cat's replaced under warrantly and the air pump which I payed for. Once the air pump goes your cats are not far behind.

I used 93.

If it's the air pump, the extended warranty will cover that.

I'll take the car to a chevy dealer so they can fix it with no deductible.
