car making ticking noise????
car making ticking noise????
I have a 2000 camaro ss that makes a ticking noise. It makes this noise when I start it, put it into gear, or when I punch on the gas. I just put new exhaust on it put it made this noise before I had this exhaust. What do you think this could be. A friend told me that it is piston slapping and that all LS1 motors do that, but that can't be right can it?? Thanks

Re: car making ticking noise????
not all LS1's have piston slap. Mine doesn't. But piston slap goes away when the engine gets to normal operating temp correct? So that wouldn't explain your ticking when you rev it. Plugged lifter? Bent rod?....
Re: car making ticking noise????
Fuel injectors click whether they're working right or not. spark plugs would only really arc if the insulating wire wasn't connected to them--- I did this on accident once. I doubt that's your clicking noise. Piston slap goes away when the engine reaches operating temps, yes. I'd chance it to say you have bent rods. It's an easy fix. If you want to be sure about your injectors, just buy some Gumout or fuel injector cleaner at wal-mart or auto zone, something like that. Any place that sells auto supplies will have it.
Re: car making ticking noise????
have this same problem and was going to ask a related question. used to think it was the cat but i realize now it is too consistent and must be mechanical. would valvetrain noise amplify with an open cutout? mine does but it was making the sound before i installed the cutout. anyway, i was thinking of getting slp's 1.8 rocker set with the rods and seats, plus better springs. are they worth it? also, i want to get h/c later, but would they transfer over favorably. lastly, how much should the install cost approximately? thanks

You can buy a set of stock pushrods off the message boards for ~$20-25... first time changing them out will take you a little longer but it'll usually take any where from 15-30 minutes.
It's very easy to do if you can determine which side the bent pushrod is on
If you do a search here on the boards you'll come up with some good info on assisting you with the job.
Re: car making ticking noise????
Hold up dude...is this an automatic? if so, does it have the aluminum drive shaft? And finally, is it a constant click or does it just tick once or twice? If the anwser to these questions is yes, I'ld be willing to bet it's your drive shaft.
Re: car making ticking noise????
Yes it is an automatic, put I'm not sure whether or not it has the aluminum driveshaft or not. It just clicks once or twice. It does it when I start it up, then when I put it into a gear, and when I punch the gas. The car seems to run fine it's just that, that ticking noise is annoying.

Re: car making ticking noise????
odds are it's an aluminum shaft. if you have the 3.23 rear end, it is. These cars are notorious for this. Mine does it too.
From what I know there isn't a real cure for it. I've heard people drilling them, filling them with that foam goo, and even stuffing card board inside??? At first I thought it was the u-joint but upon further research I found that it is what it is...a noisy drive shaft that won't hurt anything. I plan to put in new u-joints because I like to learn the hard way and it's pretty cheap to do. I run at the track and abuse it on the steet and nothing has come of the mysterious "click." Don't go pulling out rods if you don't have to.

Re: car making ticking noise????
from what ive been reading it seems like all LS1s have this same problem with the ticking noise, along with a squeak in the belt.
both get better after the car warms up, someone theorized that it might be just that because the engine is aluminum it might give off more noise
i wouldnt worry too much about it
also, i think all LS1 cars have aluminum drive shafts
