Can I look at an LS1 engine and determine what year car it is out of?
Can I look at an LS1 engine and determine what year car it is out of?
I want to buy a LS1 engine but I want to make sure it is out of a 2000 or later car. Can I look at that sticker on the head or anything else to determine what year car it is out of?
Thanks
Nick
Thanks

assuming all things are stock...
the front of the intake on 98-00 ls1's have an EGR pipe coming out of the top - these are the ls1 intakes
01-02's do not have this pipe - they are the ls6 intakes
i'm not sure if i'm right on this point, but
if the intake has EGR and there is an AIR tube connected to the airbox, then it is an 00

That is a 98 F-body LS1.
Those are 98-99 exh manifolds.
It has EGR (98-00 F-body only)
The give away though is the perimiter bolt valve covers in pic 2.
They were also used on 97 Vette LS1's, but a Vette would not have EGR.

The guy trying to sell it is claiming it came out of a 2001 Trans Am WS6.
The only reason I am want 2000 or later is because I heard the blocks were better. Yes, it does come with an LS6 intake, but I am not so concerned.
My plans are to build it up to put out about 600 HP to the wheels.

Seperate coil packs?? I though all LS1's had seperate coil packs??
I have an 00 LS1 in my Z, When I did the headers I had I think cast iron manifolds w/ sheetmetal covers..
98-00 -had EGR, no LS6 intake
00-02 -Have no EGR= LS6 intake
00-02 -COULD have the LS6 block, better bottom end bay to bay breething. Forgot exactly what it was called. The luster of the block and the casting #'s are the only way to tell. Or asking someone on here, or someone w/ a trained eye...

If those are your plans, you shouldn't worry about if the block is weak or not, since you should hopefully want to replace just about everything on the engine
