camaro no start-security light

my buddy just bought a 98 camaro after totalling his 98 firebird (he cant drive.... rich boy. anyway...) and now it wont start and the security light is flashing along with a buzzer going on and off with the light. he, for some reason, thought the battery was dead, so he tried to jump it, but the engine wont even turn over. If anything, i think the battery went dead, triggering a fail safe on the starting system because it thought someone was trying to disable the alarm. I havnt looked at the car myself, but given the situation i thought someone on here could help us out with what could be causing this and how to bypass whatever security trigger has been set off.

thanks guys

It is prolly the VATS system (I think thats what it's called) you usually have to wait untill the security light turns off to try it again b4 it will start or it could be the security thing on the key is bad, try the spare key

are you sure that's what it is? what would trip the security lock then? wouldnt it just not start the car?? or is it the fact that the key cylinder was turned without the proper VATS signal that messed it up?
so replace the key or the lock cylinder?

are you guys sure that's what it was? it wouldnt have anything to do with the battery draining?

anyone have ANY other ideas?

problem solved. i called him today to tell him to try his spare key and he said he fixed it by accident. he took the battery out and had it checked, and it checked out fine, so he reinstalled it and now the car works fine, so it was just that the terminals were too loose... He's not quite the technician that we had hoped he'd be after takin the classes we're in. lol. oh well, he's a good kid. anyway, i guess it had a little something to do with what i was saying about the loss of power and security system and what not, but its not important. i appreciate the help you guys gave! and im definately glad everything's fixed now and it didnt even cost any money!
thanks again
