Cam Questions

Allright, I've done some searching, but its hard to find answers. I am going to get a cam shaft here in about a couple of weeks. I need to know what grind or whatever i need for my application, a good brand name, and answers to other stuff to get like lifters, springs, etc.
So, i drive long distances alot, and short distances. I want a cam that will increase th HP quite a bit, but still be a daily driver. i dont want to do it if i cant see the gains. One guy said to go with the 224, but i dont know, i want to be over 350 hp on the new cam and stock heads. is this possible? I have the air intake and straight pipes if that matters.
Also, i need to know what lifters and springs i need to get to make it all happen.

Thanks guys, i dont know what i would do without you.

Re: Cam Questions

Yeah. He gave ya good advice. A cam around the 224 duration is probably what you're looking for. Make sure that you have some long tube headers though so that the cam can breath. The tr224 or the tsp225 would get my vote. Both can bring a full bolt on car close to 400 rwhp w/ a good tune.

Re: Cam Questions

I would get headers, but i only have the money to do the stuff im going to to, which is cam, clutch, and gears. Isthe cam still worth it if i dont get headers.

Re: Cam Questions

I would skip on the gears if you drive you car long distances alot, and get some headers. Is your clutch completely gone or why are you getting one? I would recomend doing the cam and headers first before gears. Are you having these parts installed by somebody or are you doing these mods yourself? But you should be able to hit 350rwhp really easy with cam and headers. Also did you figure the price of a computer tune for the cam?

Re: Cam Questions

Contact Geoff at Thunder Racing. I was in there last Friday for a tune and he showed me one of his employee's cars.

This car was cammed with his cheaTR cam and put down 360rwhp through manifolds with a catback. The rest of the car was really basic. The idle was virtually a stock idle.

You can find this cam on his website. It's around 214/230 on a ~115 with really steep lobes. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Some of the other local tuners are getting just over this kind of power, but with a lopey idle and long tubes. Something to consider...

Re: Cam Questions

Wow, that sounds sweet. Are we talking RWHP or crank? How much would lower gears help me from a dig? Im thinking 4.10's or so, some people say i wont have any traction at all, but thats not a factor for me. how much is a cam and gears going to kill my milage.

Re: Cam Questions

Well, I got 26 mpg last weekend with 4.10:1 gears in my bolt-on car. With the .5:1 sixth gear your milage won't suffer much if any if you decide on 4.10 gears. Just make sure to stay on top of your maintenance- fresh plugs, wires, properly working O2's to get the most out of your car. In town the lower gears could actually improve your milage as you have better mechanical advantage to get the car up to speed.

How much with the cam hurt your milage? Well, this one would be more economical than the 224 you were looking at previously.

Yes, that was RWHP. This cam has short duration, but has fast ramp rates which give it incredible lift. This low-duration, high-lift approach to valve opening usually yields impressive power for the duration, a tame idle, better emissions, and more economy. Geoff told me that this little cam still made power to 6800 rpm for what it's worth and ran great on the stock tune.

Keep in mind the car this cam was installed in had a better intake than you did.

What gears are in your car now? 3.42's?

Ben

Re: Cam Questions

Yeah i think 3.42s. That sounds good for the milage though. Another question man, i saw the Trex on the site as well. Could that work for me? I do like the sounds of it and the cheaTR cam. I will call Geoff tomorow and talk with someone who knows more than me.

Re: Cam Questions

Yeah, those 4.10's would give you right around 20% more torque to the rear wheels.

How's your gas milage now?

Re: Cam Questions

I didn't really notice a difference in gas mileage with my 4.10's. I noticed a big accelleration difference though. Definately worth it.

Re: Cam Questions

The trex is a huge cam. You would really need to get gears above 4.10's and headers. I am looking at the magic stick from TSP and the pacesetter longtube headers.

Re: Cam Questions

the TR224 cam will get you right around 360 at the wheels with a tune, assuming you have the bolt ons to match it.

i'm currently running the TSP torquer cam, 233/233 on stock heads and a mild tune, i'm making in the mid 390s at the wheels.

on the highway i got just over 24mph doing 80mph most of the way, and around town (semi-city driving) i got 18mpg.

Re: Cam Questions

Correction on my above post. The cheaTR cam put 365 to the wheels (not the 360 I previously said).

This was throught stock exhaust manifolds & stock factory converters with a muffler, ls6 intake, and intake.

Re: Cam Questions

Ok cool, as long as a get a reasonable gain in HP. I talked to a guy named Dave or David or whatever at Thunder Racing, he answered alot of my questions. Does the package deal with the cheaTR cam and the springs and whatever else sound like a good buy to you guys? also he said i can leave the stock lifters, but recommended i change them do to my car having 95k on it. I wanted a second opinion from you guys.

Thanks All

Re: Cam Questions

wouldn't having those fast ramp rates and high lifts mean that he would have to change his valve springs often? That seems to be what I am reading on the other boards. About every 10,000 miles between changes.
