cam question
got a couple of questions. 1- will the ls1 hot cam kit work in my 5.3 truck? 2- if so does anyone have an install guide on how to put a cam and valve springs on the ls1 trucks?3-and does anyone know if you have to pull the intake on the ls1 to change the cam? thanks in advance for replys

All i know from what people have told me that the LS1 hot cam sucks. Not the power but Idling is bad, I would go with a com cam I have a 224/228 with a 581/589 lift on a 112LSA and it idles great with computer tunning, and it made on my Z 50+rwhp
Hey guys the ls1 hotcam isn't a bad cam but first off for a 5.3 liter it is going to respond very differently. First off the torque won't be as high due to less cubic inches...that is typical. Second, when the hell are you going to turn those kind of rpms in an automatic truck????
Granted if performance isn't what your after just sound...great! Just a thought and a suggestion. Don't use a hotcam. Look around a bit. You can get a better deal on a better cam suited for the 5.3. Look towards mti's cams, B1 for starters

Had idleing issues at first, but just needed a little tune. Now you "almost" can't tell it's there.
My hotcam idles ok with stock tune. If I drilled the TB it would probably eliminate the hot start surging, but I'm just waiting to install the LT's so I can get a tune. I would avoid this cam with an automatic if not getting tuning. Having a stall converter would help though. I bought mine used(cam, springs and retainers) for $200 shipped from a guy that had it in his auto car. He said he had to drill the TB hole 1/4" just to idle, after tuning he had an "auto" cruise effect. If you buy used(I would do it again, saved $200+ship over new) just make sure to get everything checked before install. While not a "max effort" cam, if does make decent power as seen above. And has that noticable lope in the idle
. The lower lift is nicer to the springs and doesn't have that sewing machine noise from the valvetrain.
EDIT: Thought I'd add that I had before and after dyno's without LT's(only changed the cam and pushrods). Below 5k rpm I only gained ~7rwhp 10rwtq. By 5700 rpm I was making ~25rwhp 25rwtq over stock with the stock tune. LT's and tuning should help dow low though.

the 112lsa wont like the auto in your truck and there are better cams out there for what trucks are used for...it will work but i cant say youll be happy performance wise because like others have said unless your spinning your truck to 6400 while towing it aint really worth it
besides custom cams arent that expensive get somethign that will fit your needs. Also you dont need to remove the intake to do a cam swap.
